Fuel Filter Before Pump... What About After?

If you wanna go Gonzo, get an EFI filter for an E30 and put that after the pump.

 

That'll give you some clean fuel....

When was the last time you cleaned out your fuel tank?  If never, two can't hurt...and it would be a good idea to pull the sender unit/pickup out of the gas tank and clean the screen at the bottom of the pickup.  Bet it's gunky if it's never been out...

I had 2 fuel filters in line for a while, and recently removed the 1st filter before the mechanical fuel pump because several people said it was not an optimum setup, so now I just have 1 filter between the fuel pump and carb. Can anyone tell me WHY it doesn't work as well with 2 filters in-line? Extra effort for the pump?

 

I did check my tank's sender unit and screen to make sure they were not gunked up, and checked for rust in tank (seemed fairly clean) Also replaced the gasket between sender unit and gas tank

Because it makes the fuel pressure even lower yet at the pump suction.  Study up on fuel vapor pressure/temperature relationship and how fuel boils at elevated temperature underhood.  In street lingo it's called vapor lock.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Pumps do not draw very well but they push just fine,  it takes very little restriction on the inlet side to cause vapor lock.  again if your tank is dirty trying to keep the big chunks out of the pump is a good thing but otherwise I only run filters after the pumps.

A screen before the pump works really well in the race car- it keeps chunks from jamming the vane pump,

but presents a very low restriction to flow.

 

Another thing I found, along these lines, was that the lower the pump, the less trouble it had drawing fuel.

Thus, the beauty of an in- tank pump...

 

A third was that chunks in your tank (and thus, a jammed fuel pump) usually causes

 a bigger problem than a filter on the suction side!!!
