camshafts thru the years

was there any major differences in camshafts for 2002's throughout its production? what model years or VIN was there major changes?

i just had valve job done with a used camshaft replaced and they are having difficulty getting the timing to set properly. i think the used camshaft they got may have been for a different model year than my '73. any thoughts?

1976 smogers are different but not too much.

I have a K300 in a Tii, a 300 norris w dual 40's, and I know not what in the beater. timing should not be a problem if the cam and the crank are properly timed.

Hey Delk, where did you get this information? My parts book says all the cams were 264's.

The 75s and 76s had more "precise" timing on their cam because of smog regulations. The tolerances were a lot tighter. They are stamped with a "5" and they were 264s like all the rest. Despite being smog cams, they are actually more desirable for tuners.

Recognizing this is an old post (12 years) ... I have some info to add:

 

Based on measurements of a stock #5 cam and discussions with a cam guru, it's reasonable to believe the #5 cam grind was designed to produce an improved/cleaner idle for the later-year 2002's (which would make sense, for those describing it as a "smog cam"). The #5 cam has a wider lobe spread, and more lift on the intake side. Probably nice for an automatic and/or car with air conditioning.

 

Measured at the cam:

 

#2 factory camshaft

0.275" lift on the intake, 0.275 on the exhaust, 60 degree lobe spread

 

#5 factory camshaft

0.294" lift on the intake, 0.275 on the exhaust, 62 degree lobe spread

(Given the intake is a different profile, I doubt the intake duration is the same as a #2.)

 

As time allows I'll install a #5 and measure duration at the valve.

Real OEM lists 3 camshafts for the M10:

Feb 1962 - Jul 1977   P/N 1 131 063 1014

Sept 1975 - Jul 1976  P/N 1 131 063 1009

Sport Cam 300 degree  P/N 1 131 126 1613

 

I could not find a part number on my cam that comes anywhere close to these.  My car was manufactured in Sept. 1975.

Can anyone identify my cam?  I would guess the #2 stamped near the sprocket means it's not a #5...but what do I know??

The #5 camshaft was only installed on 49-state versions of the 1976 2002. I believe yours is a CA-only version.

I've used one of these regrinds with 10.5:1 piano tops E12 head.  Adequate clearance by the modeling clay method.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

 

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

The M10 motor was in the NK four door sedans for nearly 5 years before it was used in the first production 02 ( a 1966 1600-2). I have a 64-65 1800Ti motor which used the same profile cam (a 264), but it is lubricated from within as it is hollow and lacks the sprayer bar in the head. I'm not sure why they did away with this design.

 

Contrary to widely circulated claims, all 02 and NK production models with the exception of the 1800TISA, used the 264 profile cam. This includes all "Ti" and "Tii" variants. BMW was looking for a small boost in performance while maintaining smooth idle and acceptable fuel economy when it designed the "Ti" and "Tii" variants.

I'm not-so-sure about that.

 

Admittedly, I was not present to remove a #5 cam from a freshly-delivered 1976 2002 M10 engine, so I can't know with certainty...

That said, the stock "#5" cam was different, per the data a few posts above.

Based on RealOem cross referencing, it appears as though they got the #2 cam.
