I beleive it snaps into place. Give it a few tugs and it should come right off. Good luck.

How does the rear view mirror install?

I have new headliner installed, so I'm figuring I need to "feel" for where it goes??

Thanks,

Len

yes theres a small rectangular hole under your new headliner. obviously its right in the middle and its a couple inches off the seal. be real careful cutting for it. i was a nervous wreck for that and the dome light but it worked out fine

Does anyone know if the opening for the rear view mirror and the rear view mirror itself are the same on the 74, 75 and 76 2002s?

Before I cut my new headliner, I want to make sure my mirror fits.

As best as I can measure through the headliner, the opening is 1 3/4" x 1/2".

On the mirror, the structure of the spring mechanism is 1 11/16" x 5/16", the width of the spring mechanism is 1 3/4" (tip to tip) and the outer edge of the mirror base is 2 1/4" by 1 1/8".

It seems like the tip to tip at 1 3/4" is the same as the side to side opening at 1 3/4".

As hard as everyone says it is to push in the mirror, it seems that the width of the opening would be at least 1/8" less than the tip to tip measurement of the spring mechanism?

The openings for, and the mirrors for, 1974 through 1976 models are all the same. I believe you angle the mirror base in and then “pop” it!

You can use a larger mirror from an E21, E23 or E28 but the visors might get in the way.  The attachment point of the mirror has 2 pins separated with a spring.  Get one pin in & then tap the other into place.

No need to cut a square hole in the headliner.  Feel at the center of the square hole in the steel above and slit the headliner almost to the ends of the hole, Then at 45deg slit it to the corners of the hole.  the headline will fold into the hole and be held snugly by the mirror.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Do it Jim's way.

The headliner will rip at the corners if you cut a squayare hole.

And grease the plungers where the run in the mirror housing, and

give them a squeeze in a viZe to work the greese in.

Then the mirror installs pretty easily and yet doesn't hurt the new headliner.
