  1. I purchased my 1974 BMW 2002 in 1974, and at the time purchased and installed a Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio. I completely rebuilt my 2002 and installed a modern radio. I was wondering if there is a market for an original Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio? It is an AM/FM radio and all the buttons, knobs and display light work, but the volume is intermittent. I was told that this is usually capacitors that have dried out, which is an easy fix. Michael BMW Blaupunkt Install Instructions.pdf
  2. I believe the part pictured below belongs under the dash somewhere. Can someone tell me exactly where? Michael
  3. Roldofo, There were no washers when I took it apart. Is there a washer on each side of the CV joint or just one for each CV joint on each side of the axle. If only one washer for each CV joint, does the washer go on the axle before or after the CV joint?
  4. I am having a knocking problem in my rear half shafts. I thought it was the CV joints, so I purchased 4 new ones from Ireland Engineering. Put it all back together, and it still knocks. After closer examination, when I spin the tire slightly, the outer part of the CV joint closest to the tire moves solidly with the tire, but the axle doesn't move. It is only 3 to 5 degrees or less, but enough to knock. After taking it apart, it looks like there is some play in the splines between the CV joint and half shaft. I have another set of axles and one CV joint came off easily and one needs to be pressed off. So, my questions are twofold. How hard should it be to remove and replace the CV joint from the axle. The new CV joints slid easily on the old axle half shaft splines. Is there any chance I messed up the splines on the new CV joints (900 miles of knocking with the new CV joints with old axles)? Can I use anything on the splines when I put it back together that prevents any future movement? Anyone else have this problem, and what was the solution?
  5. After playing with my Blaupunkt, I decided to switch to a Kenwood KMM-BT332U with Bluetooth. Although I will need to cut some of padding under the dash, hopefully it will fit above the FrigiKing evaporator and underneath the dash.
  6. For John, where is the antenna trimmer, how do I adjust it and what capacitors do I need if it comes to that? Also, for JimK, the 4-ohm speakers are connected in series which makes them 8 ohms.
  7. Thank you, since I live just north of San Diego, I will call the Radio Man tomorrow.
  8. I spoke with Vintageblau, but the rebuild cost was too expensive. I am looking for a possible less expensive alternative.
  9. I have a mono 1974 Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio that I purchased new and installed in my new 1974 BMW 2002. It has been sitting on the shelf for the last 20 years as I rebuilt the car. After taking the radio off the shelf and hooking up two new 4-ohm speakers in series (Infinity Reference REF-4032cfx) to get the 8-ohm requirement for the radio. The radio works, but the volume is low. It is loud enough sitting in the garage with the engine off, but barely, and the volume will be too low when driving. My question is how to increase the volume? I was told that the 50-year-old capacitors may have dried out and not putting out the full 4 watts of power. I am looking for an inexpensive fix, maybe changing the capacitors, or some other easy fix. I have thought about an inline amplifier, but I can't find an inexpensive 1 channel amp that would work.
  10. Any suggestions where I can find one of the stickers below? I tried to register my 1974 BMW 2002 in California and was told by the DMV that there is supposed to be a Federal sticker on the back edge of the driver's door that says something like: "This vehicle conforms to all applicable U.S.A. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in Effect on the date of Manufacture shown above" I painted my car and pulled all the stickers. I got a new set of stickers from Carl at La Jolla Independant BMW, but he said this one is not available. I copied the above information from my 2018 Pacifica driver's door.
  11. Thank you all. I decided to try the Redline MTL. Just curious, since I couldn't find any BMW FAQ threads on swapping the transmission, how difficult is it to replace it? Do I need to pull the engine?
  12. It sounds like the Royal Purple HPS 5w30 is too thin. From reading other threads, it sounds like I should switch to the Redline MTL.
  13. I purchased my BMW 2002 new in 1974. After 135,000 miles on the odometer, I started completely rebuilding my 2002 in the mid-1990s, and in 2021 it was finally drivable. I had the engine completely rebuilt. The clutch, throw out bearing, Guibo, universal and center bearing are all new. The driveshaft is rebuilt and balanced and the diff has been rebuilt. But on my original 4 speed transmission, I only replaced the seals. The transmission shifts smoothly in and out of all 4 gears and reverse and I am using 2.1 pints of Royal Purple HPS 5w30. I don't remember any noises when I pulled the car apart 25 years ago in the mid 1990s, but I now have the following concerns after 2,220 miles since reinstalling the transmission and getting the car back on the road in 2021. 1. I get a whine in first gear when accelerating and a much louder whine when deaccelerating when in first gear. This seems to come from the front of the transmission. No whining in any of the other gears. 2. I get a slight rattle in all 4 gears, which seems to come from under the shifter. It is not bad, but annoying. Any suggestions? 1. Do I need a trans rebuild? 2. Are parts still available for the original 4 speed transmission? 3. What price should I expect to pay to have the trans pulled and rebuilt? I live near San Diego, so any suggestions on shops would be appreciated.
  14. Ok, I am using 4 mm Banana plugs, which fit nicely as I don't have the original speaker connector. But which hole is for the Positive side of the speaker, the hole nearest to the power supply connector or the hole near the edge of the radio?
  15. Which speaker hole is Positive. I don't have the original speaker connector, so I am using 4 mm Banana plugs, which fit nicely. Which hole is for the Positive side of the speaker, the hole nearest to the power supply connector or the hole near the edge of the radio?
  16. What is the price, and where are you located?
  17. Does anyone have a mono speaker plug or know what speaker plugs would work with a Frankfurt US Blaupunkt radio, which I installed in my 1974 BMW 2002 when I purchased it new in 1974? I have tried standard RCA type plugs, but they are too loose.
  18. Thanks, but I need to know what the total impedance needs to be for my 1974 Frankfurt US radio. On the Vintageblau.com website, it says the speakers should be 8-ohm. But is that two 8-ohm speakers or 8-ohm impedance at the radio? I am guessing that I need two 4-ohm speakers in series to make 8 ohms at the radio.
  19. I installed a Frankfurt US Blaupunkt radio in my 2002 when I purchased the car new in 1974. Although a mono radio, I originally hooked up 2 under dash speakers, but do not remember how I wired up the speakers. On the Vintageblau website, it says that, "Speakers should be 8 ohm through the late 1970's. Using 4 ohm speakers will damage the radio over time". Does this mean that the total impedance at the radio should be 8 ohms (i.e., two 4 ohm speakers in series)? I still want 2 speakers, and would appreciate some help in how to wire the 2 speakers with my 1974 mono Blaupunkt radio, i.e., is that two 4, 8 or 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel or series? 20. I am looking for a tan leather steering wheel cover for my original 4 spoke, 1974 BMW 2002 steering wheel to match the original tan interior. I have recently completed a complete restoration and want a high-quality tan leather steering wheel cover. Any suggestions?
  21. I am still looking for and need the FrigiKing front panel AC vents that I posted about two years ago. I need to replace both of the rectangular vents in my dealer installed FrigiKing AC faceplate for my 1974 BMW. The current vent shown below is 5.8125" x 2.1875", with small. 25" protrusions on each end to allow the vent to pivot. The current hole for the vent is slightly larger at about 5.9" x 2.375" Does anyone sell something like this size A/C vent, or know where I might find a suitable replacement? If near the same size, I can also use vents that pivot in a surround with a small lip.
  22. Thank you. I looked at edge trim at McMaster-Carr, but it is only white or black. I am looking for the original gray color to match the pieces I already have. McMaster-Carr WWW.MCMASTER.COM McMaster-Carr is the complete source for your plant with over 595,000 products. 98% of products ordered ship from stock and deliver same or next day.
  23. Thank you. I now know what I need. All I have to do is find it, which is about a 72" gray piece of used pinch welt that goes from the front of the door threshold plate up the A pillar and along the roof to the B pillar. I already have completed the rear wing windows, so I don't need the full piece with the cutout to go over the B pillar. I would prefer used to match what I have already have in place.
  24. Does anyone know of anybody making new front and side trim panels for the FrigiKing evaporator. I have the original trim panels, but they are in poor shape, especially the front panel. The sides have cracks, the lower vent is broken, the upper vent is missing and the plastic is brittle. I could try to rebuild it, but a new, remanufactured trim panels would be much better.
