No more Pilkington windshields......

Recommended Posts

Figured I'd get one before they're all gone.

I'm years to late. They're all gone now.

200 year old Pilkington(UK) was bought by NPG(Nippon Plate Glass) about six years ago.

One of the first changes was discontinuing producing windshields for "old" cars.

Thought they'd always be there.  I'm just "a day late and a dollar short".

What's a. guy to do?

Mac.

Wallothnesch still appears to have a selection but shipping from Germany is as much as the cost of the windshield itself. Ouch!

I am currently trying to order a windshield from these guys, will update results.

Maybe a few Pilkintons still in the system over here.

The WN pages shows one option with heating.  I didn't know that existed!  For what it is worth, my Pilkington FW 227 was significantly different in shape to the original and I could not make it work - after multiple tries.  I reverted to the original which I installed in one try...I still have the pilkington in the attic

That sucks.  I've got one I bought 12 years ago that I have yet to install.  I sure hope it fits.

Thirty years ago, I replaced the windshield in my '69 Econoline van and the replacement was very flat looking, compared to the bulbous original glass.  It fit the opening, but didn't look half as nice as the original shape.

The Pilkington Classic shutdown happened just in the past couple months - they were open at the start of the year. NPG had invested in and sustained the classic glass production for several years, even making a big splash last year with Summit being a new distributor for their classic glass. So it’s very sudden - all their web locations are still there just ‘greyed out’. ☹️

Perhaps try contacting Sekurit, from Saint-Gobain?  They were one of our OE glass manufacturers and still look to have 02 windshields per their website.

Two other suggestions:

Try Fuyao Glass, I also think they’re still producing 02 windshields, and they have several US plants.

Try searching on the other 02 windshield BMW part numbers. The 3703 looks to be out of stock/NLA everywhere but the other two surprisingly show as still For Sale in a few places…?

For example BMWParttsDeal shows the 3605 and the 8352 windshields as available and at a discount! (clearing old stock?))

my experience with this:

I purchased front and rear clear glass windscreens from W&N in early ‘23. Biggest issue was the front windshield came cracked 2 separate times and I had a lot of back and forth with UPS insurance and W&N people. 3rd time was a charm. W&N were fairly easy to work with in the end. Glass fit well with an OEM seal, just installed in the past few months.

I can confirm that the Pilkington warehouse in Portland OR has  just turned over its last 2002 windshield, to me.

Drove up from Eugene today and picked it up.

Guy I spoke with confirmed that what's left in the system is all there is, they wont be making any more.

Bummer, glad I was able to score this one though.

Got a front and rear from W&N in 22 and it shipped in good shape first time out.  It was packed pretty well and looked like it stayed on the pallet it was originally put on with UPS

Thanks all for this posting.  Tech71, you beat me to the Pilkington WS in Portland, but I held my breath and purchased a green WS from BMWPartsDeal.  Based on the higher shipping cost from Wallothnesch to Oregon, the cost of the BMW part didn't seem to be that much more (since it's on sale currently).   Is anyone concerned that the BMW WS seals might also go unavailable?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
