NOS 02 bodyshell - Germany

An untouched period NOS shell should have nicks/scratches and signs of being 50 years old.  However, this car appears absolutely flawless.  At a minimum, the "NOS shell" was repaired and painted in a fresh grey primer (the overspray on the mounting legs gives that away).

Given that I don't speak German I'm curious what they are actually claiming.

I noticed that too--and back then, at least spare sheet metal parts came from BMW painted black--and I think that black "primer" was meant to be cleaned off before the part was actually mounted and finally painted.

Given the condition of some 60+ year old NOS Renault sheet metal (coated with some sort of green, translucent protective coating), the coating is all scratched and missing, with resultant light surface rust in some spots.

I'd expect the same with the body shell, especially around edges where it was moved around during its 50 or so years in storage.

The parts catalogue is pretty interesting: parts pages 41/1 through 41/5 provided the complete part number listings for the body shells. Shell part numbers were differentiated first by sub-model — 1502, 1602, etc. — then by body style — sedan, cabriolet, touring — and finally, where applicable, by roof — no sunroof, manual sunroof, electric sunroof (the latter only for square taillights).

Regards,

Steve

I know at least a few complete shells like this one were actually supplied by the factory.  The Inka '73 tii that Mobile Tradition (what's now BMW Classic) constructed back in 2005/06 began with a complete roundie body shell they found at a dealership somewhere in northern Germany.  It was then transported back to Mobile Tradition's workshop and built as a new 2002tii, using rebuilt and/or new parts available through BMW.

There are several videos on You Tube that document the process.  The car was then displayed both in Europe and here in the States.  I got to drive it for a Roundel story and photo shoot back in 2006--the article is probably in the December 06 or January 07 issue...

Mike- I’ve always hated posting about this topic🫤.  The images and articles I found pertaining to the Mobile Tradition Inka tii included mention of a square light body shell being used and a Roundie tail panel fitted. Note the second picture showing the square light tail panel being cut.
