This car has had lots of “re-paintings”, “touch-ups”, or whatever over its history. Is it an original Sahara car, with a “UPS Brown” interior? Too beige, insufficiently yellow, to be Manila?

Looks like 890 to me and I agree with your manufacturing date estimate, probably built just a few weeks after mine.

After a closer look at the old vin tag picture it looks to me like a:

model #1600-2

date stamped 1968

 

1600001 to 1650000 are the first 2002 Mfgr. dates starting in January 1968. 

 

Is it possible the number is

660 890? If so that would put it into February or March of 1968. 

 

For what it’s worth Realoem says 1 560 890 is a 320i. So no help there.

RealOEM can only supply ‘02 month and date back into 1974.  Before that you must rely on the VIN decoder maintained by the BMW 2002 Club of Columbia: accurate but not month-specific.

I’m now confident it’s VIN 1560890: very late September, possibly early October, 1967.

 

BMW Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) would happily provide a precise date and the original color, but I ask them for data sufficiently frequently that I guard against wearing out my welcome!

That makes it the 889th US spec 1600 off the line, and also explains some of the 1967 parts that are visible on it--the factory using up earlier parts.  If those seats don't have headrests, then they probably are those "chocolate brown" seats that the factory used in the 66 and 67 models--being used up.

 

That's one of the earlier US spec 1600s I've seen.

Well....how ‘bout that?

 

Better than I imagined: factory sunroof, original 1968 steering wheel, original rearview mirror, Blaupunkt Frankfurt (probably arrived with the post-April 1971 console and instrument cluster), asymmetric trim strips still in place on headlights....

 

And worse than I imagined: right rocker panel virtually gone, few traces of original seat covers and interior, silver-dollar instruments gone, original color even less clear....

 

Focusing on the engine compartment, could it have been a Bristol or Polaris car?  The smooth vinyl of the seats has a slightly navy blue cast, which could fit with either of those exterior colors.

 

Gonna need some serious lovin’ by someone who really appreciates an early sunroof example.... ?

Send BMW Archives an email (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) with your car’s VIN, requesting their data on the car.  Of primary interest will be the manufacturing date.  It will also confirm the factory exterior color.

 

But yours is the 35th U.S.-spec 1600-2 manufactured — before the 156xxxx VIN series, U.S. and Euro-spec cars were not distinguished by VIN’s.  But the piling on of new U.S. DOT and EPA standards dictated that U.S. cars needed to be distinguished from Euro-spec cars throughout the manufacturing process, not simply at the end of the assembly line.

 

Below is a March 1968 1600-2 factory brochure hawking all the great 1968 model “safety improvements”, some of which were not implemented until January 1, 1968.
