1968. Pulled out of a shed. WI.

From the picture, I'd guess it's a 1600, and probably a '67.  Silver center as well as side grilles, and note the mirror mount on the leading edge of the door.  Don't think they didn that on any of the '68s.  But the front bumper is a '73--at least the guards are, and it appears to have a long-side rear bumper too.  

 

Would love to get a peek a the VIN...bet it begins with 155 or a very early 156xxxx...

My '68 has the mirror at the leading edge of the door, i think you are probably correct with your VIN prediction.

Lorin, I presume your '68 is a 1600--if so is it a 156xxxx VIN--and a low number (lower that 1561000)?  Those first US-only spec 1600s had a lot of carryover parts from the "all markets" '67 cars (155xxxx VINs) and we'd all be interested in determining how long it took the factory to use up those parts.  That outside mirror of yours was originally meant for NK sedans; they didn't work so well on the 2 door cars as they interfered with opening the vent window all the way.  And does your car have the embossed hood molding trim?  How about the chrome trim on the dashboard and all silver instrument cluster housing?  Those are all "1967" parts that the factory may have used up in producing the first US market '68s.

Mike,

Yes, it is a 1600. 1560300. Embossed hood trim, 1600 badge in the upper corner of the rear, triangle holes in the front of the trunk. The interior had been replaced with later parts when i bought it 20+ years ago, only the silver instrument cluster remained.

And with a September 13, 1967 manufacturing date, so Lorin’s VIN 1530300 is technically a 1968 model, but still bears some of the distinctive 1967 model traits, as Mike and Lorin point out.

 

Lorin’s would have been a 12-volt car from new, however: VIN 1533868 (manufactured August 18, 1967) marked the first 12-volt 1600-2.

And my best guess for VIN 1560890 would be a manufacturing date in late September 1967, perhaps early October 1967.

 

Are others here reading the VIN as something other than ...890?

 

This car has had lots of “re-paintings”, “touch-ups”, or whatever over its history. Is it an original Sahara car, with a “UPS Brown” interior? Too beige, insufficiently yellow, to be Manila?
