I didn't know this size existed anymore.  Cheap too!  I'm tempted to go back to skinny tires.

Paul,

The original tire on most U.S.-imported ‘02’s, the Michelin XAS in the 165HR13 size, has remained available since it was introduced in 1965.  Like many 165/80 tires, it is technically a 165/78 tire, but the industry has rounded the profile ratios to the nearest round number for clarity and “convenience.”

Besides the Chinese manufacturers producing 165/80/13 tires presently, Michelin, Dunlop, and Vredestein have offered 165/80/13 tires through the years (Vredestein may have recently or temporarily ceased produced of the 165/80 size).

Early on, the XAS became a “mandatory option” on cars imported by Hoffman Motors, since Hoffman, rather than the retail customer, generally ordered the cars.  The first window sticker below, from a March 1968-manufactured 1600-2, illustrates the option. Eventually, ca. 1975, under BMW NA importation, HR-rated radials became standard equipment — there were few HR-rated radials offered in the ‘70’s, the XAS being the most common — as on my April 1976-manufactured 2002, window sticker in the second photo.

Best regards,

Steve

There’s been discussion lately that Michelin has re-introduced the tubeless version of the 165HR13 XAS.  But I haven’t yet heard from anyone who has actually obtained a set of the tubeless version.  Anyone?

I bought Michelin XAS FF 165HR13 tires from Longstone in mid October and they were tube type.  I choked a bit on the price (169 GBP per tire, 9 GPB for the tubes) but figured it's about the same as tire for my e46.  Shipping is included in the price and was extremely quick (less then a week).   Tires were marked made in France.  IMG_3786.thumb.JPG.65f0cfe35a7aa746d46ef64e6a0182c1.JPGIMG_3787.thumb.JPG.d27128b5efbcce76c5e9b21bbf8250d3.JPGIMG_3788.thumb.JPG.d4d6341722933d6b39524c0304df9742.JPGIMG_3789.thumb.JPG.11f28764b14bb7a0fcaf730f919a62d1.JPG

Michelin or Pirelli in 185/70-13

The only Michelin 185/70-13 is the XDX, at $351 each, delivered, from Longstone Tyre.  The only Pirelli 185/70-13 is the Cinturato (CN36), at $157 each, delivered, from Longstone Tyre.  Both are VR rated, so perhaps overkill for an '02.

And given the overall quality and performance of the Cinturato, it's pretty tough to rationalize the extra $200 per tire for the XDX's!

Just sayin'....

Steve

I’m in for 185/70 or 205/60

Also I have heard some poor reviews of the CN-36’s mostly that they were kind of “bulbous” and rubbed the fenders.

Cruzr’s recent thread is presently the single-best source for 165/80/13 and 185/70/13 tires currently available in North America:

Scott’s listing, plus the brands and models added within the thread, give both a good picture of what’s available and the wide range of prices: $34 to $351 per tire!  There’s a 13” tire in these two sizes to match most people’s needs.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if even more brands and models were available in Europe or Asia.

Regards,

Steve

The Michelin XAS 165R13 tires currently on the market and which I have on the 2002 Cabriolet, are the FF (Formula France) type.

The FF tires were designed for racing and are softer than the regular tires. As can be expected, they offer better grip, but also wear much faster.

A longer-lasting and more reasonably priced tire is the Continental EcoContact 3 165/80 R13 83T. Very pleased with these. Unfortunately not available in the USA.

Call me crazy but I'd be interested in 175x80x13.  Original sidewall height makes speedo/odometer correct.

I'd accept 175x70x13s

I'm with Paul. Incorrect speedo/odo is frustrating when it's due to incorrect tire size.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
