BAT '73 tii $50k - (not as nice) Canada '74 tii for $15k

Just saw this on Hemmings.  Seeing that I'm working on getting a '74tii back on the road (then selling it) I've begun to take an interest in values.  Of course, the $50k BAT '73 tii was beautiful and perhaps deserved the money, but this '74 tii in Canada looks mighty nice at less then 1/3 the price.  Yes, its not a roundie, but I would think it would garner a higher number.  Am I missing something here?

For sale is a rare matching numbers 1974 BMW 2002 Tii. 3 owner car purchased new in Scarborough, Ontario and sold in 1976 to the second owner in Agin Court, Ontario. And was purchased by the third owner in 1987 in Toronto, Ontario and has been meticulusly maintened for the last 30 years by the same owner. 

The car is in great condition, turn they key and go for a ride on a winding mountain road. 
Aesthetically pictures do not do it justice; the car is in very good condition, the interior is a respectable (8.9/10) and the black paint is stunning (mirror finish). The gaps are all straight, the rubbers are in good condition.

The original motor was professionally rebuilt by a renowned Canadian BMW specialist in Toronto, Canada (Steve Gailitis owner of Bavarian Motors- 38+ years of BMW experience) and the car has had full maintenance and tune up done (new plugs and cables, rotor, fluids, coil, belts, motor mounts, battery, filters, fuel injection lines, switches, cluth, alternator etc....). 
Underneath, the body was wire-brushed, cleaned and sealed with two coats of POR15 to seal and keep prevent any rust from forming. 

The car registered in Ontario. It handles like a dream, it is very peppy and agile. Great arround corners. Furthermore the car also comes with the centre mag caps for the period mag rims and receipts for the maintenance.

Couple things jump out at me...

 

Major rust repairs on rear inner fenders (shock towers)

Front fender tops at struts also look like they were rusty?  ...not sure

With that known rust, I'd want to know the condition of the rockers and subs

Overspray all over the engine bay... the wiper fluid bottle is a disgrace

Ray would make note that the inner, passenger door handle is missing the plastic insert 

 

At least the door cards are uncut and there is no snorkel on the front clip.  Nice dash and correct Keinzle clock for a '74

   It's pretty simple, the red 50k Tii was an "honest" car with lots of attributes in its favor (roundie, bumpers, obvious care taken).  The quality of the car spoke for itself.  The car in your link is a "dishonest" car with none of those attributes.  The superlative-filled description does not match the photos.

Well said.  Eastern-Canadian winters are not nice to cars.  I fear that underneath that paint is a minefield of rust.  The rear shock towers and trunk in general is very scary.

It's not only the evidence of past rust that scares me, the quality of the rear shock tower repairs -- I'll leave the bad paint job alone -- suggests to me that the repairer was incompetent, grossly under-funded, or some combination of the two....

 

If the seller gets $15,800, he's a lucky guy!

Well noted.

The car has been on/off Ebay since the middle of last year.

The car was previously/originally Granatröt, as could be seen in the earlier trunk pics. Seller has painted it over now.

This is another one that's been for auction/for sale since early last year. Buying price has gradually decreased from $30k. Looks a lot better than the black one, but there must be something keeping buyers away.

Rare, you bet!  But let's distinguish availability from rarity.

 

There were only four colors that remained available throughout the '02 production run:

 

Chamonix, Schwarz, Sahara, and Polaris

 

(Nachtblau existed for most of that run, but only for the 2000/2800/3.0Cs coupes, not for '02's.)

 

I don't know how rare Schwarz cars were in Europe but they were darned rare in the U.S.!

This car has been floating around hemmings, kijiji and ebay for a while.  I gaze longingly at the images every few weeks since it's already in Canada, but a lot of the issues mentioned here hold me back from doing anything about it.  If it was closer to Toronto I'd likely have given it a drive and a closer inspection already, but Ottawa is a 6 hour drive.  There are some really nice museums there, so maybe when the weather is better I'll take a couple days off and go.

 

I love Canada and could never live in the US, but I do envy your easy access to cars that have lived their life in dry, winter free climates.  Importing is a huge pain and Canada is not kind to old cars.

I'm starting to think I got jipped on my 74 tii at $35K+a grand coughed up by BAT to meet the reserve. 

 

That car was as rust free as they come will all original sheet metal, not to mention the factory turbo bits dialed in and sorted.

How do you get "gypped" selling a car through an auction? You set your reserve price based on your bottom line and the market speaks. What am I missing? Do you mean that you made a mistake in not setting the reserve higher?

 

That looked like a nice car btw, I remember it on BaT.

Well in actuality I had a higher reserve in mind when I started the process with BAT, however they pushed back implying they would not list the car unless it was lowered. The actual auction " the market" did not reach the new lowered reserve amount. BAT made up for the difference and thus sold the car as per the terms of the auction agreement. It's all good, I just have seen lesser quality builds sell for so much more. For those in the know, if you actually saw the car in person it would be obvious how nice it was and well put together. I needed the extra dough to fund the other tii build going on that is all. 

 

But what do I know, other than don't let BAT persuade you to lower your reserve.
