Velocity Stacks - should they have filters or not?

This is for a weber dual 40 side draft set-up (obviously);

I've been looking through archives, doing internet research, yadda yadda yadaa - cannot seem to come up with a complete answer on the pro's / con's of "socking the trumpets".  I like the look of the open stacks, not to mention the sound, but combing over what I have gathered, covering the stacks with sock filters will improve the wear and life of the engine, however, cause the webers to be re-tuned and may have a slight adverse effect on hp

So, I'm asking the FAQ as you guys are as detailed as heck! Thanks in advance.

BTW - I saw that Limy Steve installed some mesh covers on his stacks but again, I've read socks are better than mesh - WTF - help.

Of course it's your car so it's your call but I would always run filters. The difference in HP would be negligible Vs the potential damage to your engine. Sound wise, a few foam filter socks will not make much difference.

This. You will not notice any change in sound or power.

If your air's perfectly clean, you don't need a filter.

Otherwise, you're shortening the life of the engine.

How much?

Depends on the amount of dirt flying around.

One good sandstorm will ruin your day, though...

I run an OEM paper filter.  The race car uses one from a 944, I think.  It's huge.

And ugly as sin.  I even made the housing yellow to show off how ugly it really is.

What I think, what I do...

Great topic. My Ti lux running dual side drafts also with no filters and I am in search of proper filters. Also looking for someone that knows how to dial in dual 40's on a 2 litre in the SoCal area. Thanks

Give Matt Rose a call at Ronin Autowerks (Fullerton); real good guys - I know it may be a hike for you, they'll get you in and out.

I've also cruised some of the Alfa boards, good stuff. As for the other brothers who chimed in, this has been some good insight, thanks a bunch!

Yes, only the short angled ones are listed but he has longer ones also.

You mean, Paul Spruell?

He has gearsets for Alfas that make me drool.  But

even if something like that was made for 2002's,

I couldn't afford it...

This is something I've never asked you, Steve.  These UNI filters from Spruell...do they come with the little black donut, like what Ireland's provide?  I'm speaking of the rubber ring that snugs up to the flare of the velocity stack allowing something for the UNI to clamp onto.

You can see I use the longer, angled UNI filters.  My Solex stacks don't have the flare, so I didn't need that donut, but I'm guessing that most stacks do.

Yes they do, and the little float vent filters which I don't use because they screwed up my AFR
