I stumbled across this thread where the original poster is wondering exactly what kind of deteriorating 2002 he's got in front of him. Its VIN / chassis# doesn't fall between 1680001 and 1696448, so that excludes it from being a ti. The original poster says that the car has all of the Maxi parts.. (including the seats and duel fuel tanks etc) ..I'm wondering if anyone out there has ever seen.. (or might know a little bit more about) ..this particular car.

Here's a link to the thread..

Here's a link that has some insight into the unknown world of the 2002 Maxis.

And here's some pics from the original poster.

What do you think?

VIN list and the VIN plate shown in the post is apparently from the Dutch BMW importer; it's not the factory VIN plate.

The numbers themselves appear to be hand-stamped, so it may be a special modification done by the Dutch importer and then re-numbered. Just a guess; I'll bet our Dutch brethern have a good explanation.

cheers

For some reason your link to the "maxi" site doesn't work for me.

However, a total of 14,256 1600/1602s and, an unknown (to me) number of 2002s were assembled at ETS Moorkens, Kontich, Belgium, between 1966 & 1972. They were delivered as CDK and assembled at Moorkens in order to avoid import tax into Belgium on fully assembled cars.

174XXXX were 2002s, and 175XXXX & 176XXXX VINs were 1600-2/1602s.

That car isn't really in that bad of rust shape. I had one that was worse than that with no rocerks and could pick it up from the middle with my tractor. I would totally save a Maxi like that!

I'm not sure what they're saying on that forum, but that car actually looks like it may have been flooded at some point. You can see a distinct 'dirt' line in the interior on the door panels and seats and also in the engine compartment, on the radiator and inner fender area. You can see how the bottom half of the door panels and also the radiator is very dirty while the top half isn't.

Neat car to save, but I'd have to sell my house to do so....too much rust and neglect.

The term "sympathetic restoration" comes to mind.

To be honest, I have no recollection of my avatar's origin.
