Who here owns a first year 02: 66/67 1600-2 or 68 2002?

I used to own a white 67 1600, vin 1528890. Bought it in 71 from the original owner. Gave it to the ex-GF when I got the 74 because I didn't know what I was doing, didn't know what I, didn't have room, and didn't have cash. If you were in the SF-Berkeley area during that time, you may have seen a white 1600 with the inset hood panel area painted dark blue or satin black. Don't know status of car but probably trashed and long gone, it's death hastened by the ex-GF.

Hi 16oo friends!

I'm submitting my list of 150XXXX cars from the Uk 02 forum. It's not easy to make the list longer. The survivalrate is incredibly low! Any news on the 1500512 mentioned on this forum? How many will we be att the 50th anniversary in Munich 2016?

Contributions to the list are greatly appreciated!

I've got a manila 67 1600-2, vin 1522898. It's got a later 2002 engine and diff, recaros and alpina steelies, but otherwise is all original. Mostly original paint and interior in great shape for it's age. German-bought car brought back to states by US serviceman. Lived it's whole life in California and apparently in a garage. I'd be interested if anyone could help find out more of this car's provenance. Gracias. Rojo

Regarding my previous post, I inquired with Andreas yesterday and here is the bmwgroup response:

"The BMW 1600 VIN 1522898 was manufactured on April 17th, 1967 and delivered on April 26th, 1967 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Manila, paint code 004."

This is sort of surprising, since the car seems to have original fenders, quarters, and bumpers, and all appear to be euro. No side markers, euro license mount, turn signals and lights. And the early vin is before the "official" US vins. Plus when I bought it the PO told me the car was originally bought and brought to the US by a member of the military stationed in Europe. The car came with the original (maybe) german license plate as well as some letters and docs from the PO indicating this to be the case. Can anyone explain how this might have come to be? Thanks.

I can't explain the VIN and build date issue but side marker lights and headrests did not appear on U.S. cars until Jan/Feb of `69.

I have read that Hoffman Motors imported 1600-2 or 1602 "152xxx through 154xxx" vin cars from Europe until the US spec "156" VIn Sept - Dec 67 cars became available for importation. In the "02" restoration guide it also lists 1600 mondel VIN starting in "156" as US 1600 and the "152" VINs are European 1600-2 1602 Market cars some of which were imported by Hoffman Motors beginning in 1967 into the US Market....be proud of your 156 VIN if you have one...there were fewer US 1600 cars produced than the Euro 1600-2

US 1600 only 13,162 produced through '71

EURO 1600-2 1602 total 224,441 Produced through '75

Fun stuff!!

I'm a BMW Zombie and there's no cure!

Resurrecting an old thread here, but last summer I bought VIN # 1504010.
Produced on 25th August 1966 and Derby Grau (paint code 056).

Full history and besides a respray in the original colour at some point in the mid-90's, it's still a unrestored and unwelded car with matching numbers and all...

A few pics for you:

As I am trying to establish a "'66 Registry", I would really appreciate any info on other VIN # 150xxxx cars still in existence out there.
I am working on the basis of the list put together above by Mats, but I have since then updated & expanded info on some of the cars and even added a few new ones to the list...

I'd be grateful if you could send me your list, to add to mine. I sent mine to Matts back in 2011 and have no additional 150XXXX VINs since then.

Parted out '67 Sahara/Brown VIN:1531670.

It was totally neglected before I bought it. (should have done a PPI.  To excited to wait for one)

It had to go.

Waiting for FAQers to post WTB classifieds for pieces I still might have for them.

1967 1600-2, VIN 1515129, built on January 26th, 1967, sunroof, body & drivetrain mostly stock, converted to 12v, interior is a work in progress, on the road in Ohio when the weather is nice.

Karl

I'm now the proud owner of this car and it's currently under full restoration. For those interested you can see more @ my project blog (link in signature).

How are everyone eles's early cars? Are all the cars on this list still on the road?

I'm also looking for a 1967 specific owners manual (or other sales literature, etc) if anyone has one they'd like to part with.

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
