In Denver, I just go to a professional locksmith. He took one look at the key and said sure! The hardware stores are only set up for the garden variety jobs.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

order the 2 blanks on the right (ignition and trunk)

from any BMW Dealer - and if your dealer is

an old timer - he/she may even have the old key-cutting

machine still set-up in the parts dept. Otherwise

take your BMW blanks to any GOOD Lock Smith

for cutting - not pathmark, walgreens, homedepot please

Don't get carried away with the 'folding' keys

= N.L.A. unless your riding a BMW bike

and while your at the dealer - order a Moboil Tradition

02 key fob

Happy New Year

Try this place:

http://www.keys4classics.com/html/BMW1502-2002.html

They can supply and cut your keys using the original codes for the locks.

If you are lucky and still have the original owners manual with the key codes in the front or your ignition & door locks still have the small sticker with a code on it (4 digits IIRC). Then you just email them and hey presto new keys that are better than a duplicate, they are cut from the factory codes. I had a set done and they are perfect.

to an ILCO number (Taylor isn't around any more)--my local locksmith has blanks in stock.

Ign keys aren't nearly as much trouble as the early locking gas cap keys!

Excellent....

I was gonn say, I ordered 2 "real" blanks, and no locksmith wanted to cut them for me either, said it was made of somethign too hard that would damage their cutting machine.

But they had a similar key made of a softer metal I guess that they cut for me ! Works a treat. And I have 2 useless real BMW key blanks now ! well, not useless, they are nice for cleaning your nails in a pinch ;-)

Success!!! I found an old hardware store not to far away from the house and he was able to make two copies for me.

Turns out that keys from a 71 vw will work, but he had to trim the ends down a bit, but an overall success.

Thanks for the info. Now I love my VW even more.

FWIW: My tii ignition/door key is a "DL", trunk key is "Huf"

Both my original VW Bug ignition key is "Huf" along with my newer door keys.

  • 3 years later...

If you ever get out to Athens, there is a place here on Atlanta Highway by the name of Clarke County Lock & Key that has cut several for me (door and trunk). I bought blanks on Ebay but when I took them in to be cut he said I didn't need to do that because he had the blanks as well.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
