Key Copying

All of the local hardware stores where i live don't seem to be able to cut a new key for my 02, much less have one to cut on....

Most of them are completely befuddled when i tell them its for a BMW 2002...being down in the south, the common response is...A what? B-M-W 2002? is that the year? :)

Anyways, where have you guys (and girls) gotten your keys duplicated at?

I have the same problem. It's the two-sided cut that they can't deal w/. They say they can't hold the key properly. I have $50 into wrecked keys. I even tried an old-time lock & key shop that actually had blank keys for our trunk. And he couldn't cut the ignition keys correctly.

Thanks for the tip on where to buy the blanks. An old-time locksmith shop would probably be the best bet for trying to get them cut. The newfangled places mostly have workers who cannot fathom anything out of the norm.

I have no idea, but I do know that none of the cutting machines at any hardware store will cut these keys. They have to do 1 side at a time, and when they go to cut the 2nd side, they don't have enough key to work w/, or something. I went to 4-5 places, same answer everywhere. Then the locksmith... he came close, but not close enough.

And the nice keys w/ the black plastic end on them, nobody could touch it. (well, 1 guy destroyed one for me)

If someone would please let us know who has copied your keys & how, that would be very helpful.

I bought my blanks from either Tilux or Roger on Ebay. Had them cut locally at a well established locksmith here in southern Maine. I think the key (sorry) is to find someone with the older equipment and a veteran locksmith who knows how to use it. Seems to be another dying art, unfortunately.

Hmm, well...

I'm sure they can cut it, they did mine this past January.

... maybe you can send a door handle? :-D

Cheers,

Ray

Ya need a place that can cut steel keys. Try calling around. I know of a shop in Portsmouth VA that can do it...

Email sent to them. My issue now is, how are they gonna make the copy?

I would really hate to send my only key to my car to them( the 02 is my dd). ...

I've had two ignition keys cut at Ace. Had to clean one of them up with a file after I got home, so it would unlock doors and start the car. But - it has been no worries since then.

And they were blanks I got off of E-bay....

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
