My son Ellis is remodeling his house, He needed room in his garage so he brought his car out and he is storing it at our house, so I decided to take it for a ride this morning…. I haven’t driven the car in about five or six years since I gave it to him. I forgot how well it drives.

Not driving here today.  Yet another slip-out on Highway 1 north of Big Sur at Rocky Creek.  Everyone's favorite driving road.  The Big Sur community has had to deal with so many slides and closures for a long time.  It sucks.

Not an inspirational drive (to others!), but I took the 02 to work yesterday and showed it to some fellow gearheads (one of whom has an 02).  Mix of streets and highways, it was good to get it out and run it.  43 miles round trip.

Hello Gentlemen:

I'm brand new to the 2002FAQ forum and BMW CCCA.  Recently purchased a 1971 2002 in the Detroit area and after some post-purchase servicing, plan an adventure trip 2700 miles to my home in Washington State.  Traveling with lots of tools but my 2002 experience goes back over 50 years when I owned a series of delightful '02s (1969, '73 '76).

I'm hoping for a drama-free trip but may need some advice/assistance along the way.

Thanks in advance for your support.

A little break between the storms.  Extremely Low Fire Danger.  But, there's lots of critters about.  Be careful out there...

JohnS,

Thank you for the message of being aware of outdoor inhabitants...:)

NIce car.  Those wheels and car color...what a great match!

One of those inhabitants can ruin your whole day, or euro front bumper and grill...

The deer are considered vermin by the apple farmers in my area.  Those and there's also a wild turkey explosion.  I'm a big fan of predators (the mountain lions and coyotes) myself...

EDIT: 04/18/2024:

A buddy of mine sent me a picture from his game cam in the area.  Not a great picture, but looks like 4 young mountain lions to me.  There's hope...  Keep your little poodles inside 😐  I'm determined to get a picture of one of my cars near the wild turkeys...  It's crazy.  How would you like a nice Tom Turkey coming through your windshield?  WOW, just got news.  Legend Dickey Betts RIP 😞

I did the annual Targa 805 rally on Saturday, which is a short half-day rally in the Central Coast area of CA with a small group (~20 cars). My '73 tii was the only 02 present, and there were zero Porsche 911s! There was a 924S and a 944 and a Cayman, but this tends to be a low-key, non-flash group with a couple of ratty Miatas and a Gambler 500-spec Mercedes 300TD wagon in the mix, along with an LS-swapped Volvo 242 and my buddy's '73 Cuda.

It was beautiful and green thanks to another unusually wet winter, and there were still a few water crossings, which offer the best way to clean one's windshield after traversing an uphill dirt/gravel road (see second video below). We were in a drought for many years, such things are a novelty out here!

My 02 was an absolute tank as usual, soaking up all the ruts and bumps and cattle guards with aplomb. It was a long day of driving,  leaving home at 5 AM and 600 total miles, made it home at 9 PM that night (we stopped several times along the way to hang out and then for lunch after the rally). That's about the distance we drove each day during last summer's Alaska trip in this car, so it was a familiar thing :)

I decided it was time to get my two money pits together for a meeting, so I took the 2002 on its longest trip yet to the marina to do the annual uncovering, polishing, painting, etc on our boat.

94 miles each way, much of it at 4500 rpm or more.  Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.   But once there I did tool around on some coastal roads for a bit.

The massive trunk easily let me pack up all of the  paint, tools, batteries. etc I needed.  Love using the ‘02 for normal car stuff and not just pleasure cruises!
