THANKS TO ALL OF YOU

I started using this forum on rare occasions a half dozen years ago. Over the past six months or so, I've been here daily. I've bought some things, sold more, participated in discussions, and asked a lot of questions.

Whithout fail I've received kind and valuable advice, and in some cases, detailed help with something thorny.

In recent weeks I've had occasion to use other forums for my other BMW, an E30, and other purposes. The participants have been good people, but the depth of knowledge and support hasn't been quite the same. And the technical side of this site blows everything else I've seen out of the water. The self-described old-timers who created and maintain this site perform an extraordinary service for those of us still trying to keep half-century-old cars on the road, sometimes as daily drivers. (I've put 311,000 on my two 2002s, using them as daily drivers for 36 years.)

It's a pleasure and honor to be involved with this community.

As one of those (alleged) "old timers," I will say I enjoy responding to questions--at least those I can answer.  Since my long-suffering wife had her fill of 2002 talk maybe 40 years ago (how I began writing my column--her suggestion), the FAQ made a perfect outlet to talk 2002s and share (sometimes) hard-earned knowledge with fellow 02ers.

But at least for me it isn't a one-way street.  Rare is the day I don't learn something new about 02s when I read the day's crop of FAQ messages.

So this should be a thank-you to all participants, whether you've owned your '02 from new, or just bought it last week.  We all learn from each other, and are nice about it.

cheers

Couldn't agree more with this shared gratitude. I am in over my head with my project but the folks on this forum with their insights and supportive guidance make it seem possible. Also for the newer folks, yes do a search, but also don't be afraid to ask the question. A quiet forum is a dying forum. Thank you everyone.

I second all the above. I have done work on my car ( rebuilt subframes, swapped engines and trannys, auto to manual etc) that wouldn't have been possible without the fine folks here. They provide such a positive and knowledgeable attitude that's a huge help. Any criticism is usually tongue in cheek. The 2002 specific parts that members make is very helpful as well. I hope to reach a point where I can give back. I'm afraid to ask questions on the e28 and e30 forums 🙂

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
