Finished patching the rust holes in my pedal box, cleaned, and metal prepped the box. After 3 coats of POR-15 it doesn't look half bad.  Only my third attempt at welding.  Having a welder has opened up so many more options to fix things.  Just practicing on the non-visible stuff before getting to the larger harder parts.

Today We were privileged to tour, Peter Gleeson’s BMW collection outside of Seattle with the BMW Classic Car Club.
We saw 2002 turbo #001 and some beautiful E9 coupes… what a wonderful day.

Don’t let the fear of what could happen

make nothing happen…

Soooo… the other speed bump the Inka car threw at me last week was the yoke on the back of the 4 speed was loose….???  I took it off and discovered the splines were almost completely smeared off the yoke and and output shaft was toast… shazbot

Good guy #3 @Terry Sayther stepped up and said, “swing by my shop and grab a couple 4 speeds to make sure you get a good one”

Tonight, the old box came out. I have parts on order to go with the lightened flywheel and friction disc I had in my stash.

Plan to spend this long weekend knocking most all the remaining items off the list.

Thanks again to Terry, Barney, JimK and all my other good friends who are helping with advice and good cheer.

Yep - an earlier coarse-splined unit - a relatively common failure. The design was updated soon after (perhaps @Conserv will know the approximate (or exact) cut off date). -KB

The changeover from coarse to fine splines was during the 1974 model year — I don’t have more detail on changeover VIN’s or dates.

Best regards,

My ‘72 has fine splines (see pic). If you’re correct, then I have a later model 4 speed?

Terry told me the exact same thing. This one failed spectacularly, that’s for sure. Likely one of the reasons it was taken off the road 28 years ago… With any luck, it will be sorted soon.

Or your transmission’s output shaft has already been upgraded. My impression was that BMW upgraded the output shaft splines because they were replacing so many output shafts, some while cars were still under warranty.

FYI: Transmission housings have a cast-in casting date inside the bell housing, near the nose of the starter. This is a far better indicator of a transmission’s age than the output shaft.

Regards,

Steve

Thanks, was going to ask if these had a date or other means to determine if original. If it’s inside the bell housing I hope to never see it 😂

One more datum…

I thought.. well I’ll just the good 4 speed that came out of my ‘67, 2000CS. The rear flange negated that… The driveshaft of that car places the u-joint in front and the Guibo is at the diff. No workie on this ‘72.

In eager anticipation of turning the key for the first time since starting my restoration nearly 18 months ago, I picked up temporary tags yesterday.  The lady was ribbing me for letting the registration lapse - for 13 years - and charged me a $100 late fee.

In Colorado, any car built in 1975 or older is exempt from emissions testing.  As much as our state government tries to emulate California's oppressive laws, this little exemption is a welcome reprieve.
