Fuel Injection photos with 94 BMW 318 chipped ECU

I've been a bit absent on the FAQ for the last year or two.

Part of it was because my car was undergoing what turned into a 9 month fuel injection conversion.  The other was due to a move, a new baby boy, new job, building motorcycles, etc...

A friend who has a supercharge BMW car shop in Van Nuys, CA offered to help with my dreams of Fuel Injecting my 02.

Attached are the photos.  It mostly has an '84 manifold and fuel rail, etc...

And in the end, he wrote a custom chip for a '94  318i ECU to run the car.  I originally was going with Megasquirt but the custom chip was easier for him to do.  I wasn't going to argue... he was doing me a massive favor by doing this job on his spare time.

I'm not completely tech saavy on all the work that was done. But I can say the upgrade, along with a 3.9 LSDiff is super fun to drive now.

Cheers!

Lookin good Josh!

Thanks mike.  This all started when I visited you in San Jose many years ago.  Now I can say it is finally complete.

Does your friend want to do another EFI system but this time, with megasquirt and then turbo it?

He doesn't want to mess with Megasquirt. You would be on your own for that.  I got the friend deal...But if you got the time to be without your car for up to a year and the money to spend, he'd probably take on the project.

That looks like a nice job. This could be a future project for my car as I already have a stash of '84 parts for the job up in the attic. I too thought about MS because I had read that the '84 ECU is not well suited for the 02 head and cam. I wonder how hard it would be for one to write a custom chip for the job? Also, since the 318 distributor spins in the opposite direction from the 02's did he just swap the distributor gear?

No need to mess with either the head or the dizzy, the injector ports are in the very end of the intake manifold, which makes it great as it's basically a bolt-on EFI.  I don't know much about the stock '84 setup, either Bosch K-tronic or J-tronic I guess, but I'm sure it runs just great!  FWIW Megasquirt also is great with the 318 setup, only big differences being MAP/TP based, so no need for the big mass-airflow box right after the filter, and the ability to tune it on your own.

Nice job on that intake routing BTW, that can be one of the tougher parts.  That an the throttle linkage; mind sharing any more pics of how you have that setup?  While we're sharing, here's my engine bay with the 318 intake running MS:

Ha- so an E36 318i ecu, throttle body, flapper door MAF, IAC and coil OFF plugs on an M10?  That's- custom!

Skirts the boundary of custom EFI while staying out of the MegaSquirt rabbit hole.

And keeps hardened electronics- which is the big weakness of MegaSquirt.

I like it!  I wouldn't DO it, but I like it!

Here are a few specs... It has a Motronic system from 1990 m40 318 engine with direct ignition with the 4 individual coils. No distributor.

The 84 manifold has a custom cnc'd bracket attached to a 90's 318i throttle body.

He made a custom 60-2 custom trigger wheel so it worked with Bosch vs the edis sensor. He can remake that trigger wheel if anybody is interested.

Someday I hope to install an O2 sensor... But I'm happy with it at the moment.

I believe M40 is SOHC engine so it make sense to adopt it to an M10. I am not sure if M42 motronic EFI will work on M10 (it may work but not without extra work and complications). The difference between M40 and 83-85 E30 EFI is that E30 Jetronic has an analog computer, and M40 has a digital one. Contrary to  beliefs, E30 Jetronic works perfectly fine with 2.0 liter M10 engine in 2002s. Just my 35.55 cents (updated from just my 5 cents due to inflation)....

Motronic works. My car runs great. But read above... he wrote a custom chip for it.

M42 would work- but you'd also have to add a cam position sensor, and knock sensors.  M44 would add EWS...

I was under the impression that the E30 4- banger EFI system was digital- the 6 was, certainly.  But I never

popped the cover off the ECU can to confirm that...

There are numerous confirmed cases of the E30 M10 system being transplanted into a 2002 successfully.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
