Calling all 1975/76 Original Paint Automatics

A few threads down we are looking to document the number of emission stickers that were produced for the 1975 and 1976 models.  The stickers we have documented for these years were on 4 speed cars and marked "manual transmission".  We are trying to determine if automatic transmission cars had emission stickers that were marked "automatic transmission".  If you have an original paint, 1975/76 automatic with an emission sticker, can you take a close-up picture and post it on this thread?

TIA,

As Ed mentioned, my 76 automatic is at shop getting all new interior.  I'll swing by the shop tomorrow and take a look at it to see if there is a sticker.  I'm thinking that I recall there being one and will post a response either way.  Greg

Here's a pic from my "manual" manuf 30 Sep '75 2002. Appears the sticker is same for auto & manual.

We believe that all the 49 State Auto/Manual Emission Stickers are marked "76", even though the manufacturer date was 75.  What head is on the motor, original?  We are thinking that all 49 State cars had the cleaner burning E21 heads and Smog Pump, no EGR and the CA cars got the E21 Heads, EGR and Smog Pump like all the US 75 cars with E12 heads (prior to May 1975).  What would have blown our theory is if your 75 car had a 49 State Sticker marked "75" or an original E12 head.

Thanks for contributing,

What Mark said! (Except "CA cars got the E12 Heads" [number 12 transposed into 21 in original text]).

It's the "U.S. model year" we're talking about, Les, and a car manufactured after July '75 -- such as your September '75 car -- is, of course, a '76 model year car. We're mostly looking for any '75 model year automatics and CA-only '76 model year automatics.

Thanks and regards,

Steve

I've got a '76 automatic, in San Diego.  It has the E12 head, smog pump, egr valve, etc....   Here's a picture of the emissions sticker

Wow, that is very strange.  You would expect that the only difference in the 76 manual sticker and the 76 automatic sticker would be the transmission type, but the 75 and 76 manual has ribs and "BMW" on the valve cover and the 76 automatic one does not, (like the 76, 49 State and 74 US).  Now I need to see a 1975 automatic sticker.

Thanks for your contribution,

More strange, 2 pictures of 1976 49 State emission stickers, one marked BMW 121.8 and one marked BMW 121.9.  Any theories?  All the other 75 and 76 stickers are marked BMW 121.8, so maybe when they were producing the CA cars, they needed a way to distinguish the stickers, so they changed the older/later 49 State stickers to BMW 121.9?

I suspect the 121.x is a document set-id.revision-level scheme. Thus the .9 is from a "newer version of the emissions diagram set" than the .8 (?)

I find the clarity of this idea very appealing! But I notice that wherever BMW discloses the '02's displacement in cubic inches, e.g., the Owner's handbook, they use this one-decimal-place convention. Hence my '76's original English-language global handbook says the displacement is 121.4 cubic inches. And the U.S. version supplement, dated July '75, shows a displacement of 121.3 cubic inches (photos below of the latter source). Now, admittedly, I can't reconcile any of these sources to the 121.8 and 121.9 shown on the emissions schematics, but I'm inclined to believe that these two numbers, 121.8 and 121.9, refer solely to engine displacement and not partly to engine displacement and partly to the schematic version.

Regards,

Steve

Another Long Thread-Hijacking Note: This July '75 U.S. version supplement is particularly interesting for its inaccuracies, perhaps intentional or reflective of decisions not yet made. Although this document shows clearly that there will be, indeed, CA-only and 49-state versions of the U.S. '76 model, only one diff ratio is shown: 3.64. Accidental omission, or had BMW not yet decided to include the 3.90 diff in 49-state versions? The story at the time as to why the CA-only version alone retained the classic 3.64 diff was that California required the car be re-tested in order to be "certified" with the new diff ratio -- it had been certified for '75 with the 3.64 -- if they wished to offer the 3.90. BMW said, "no thanks"!

Stopped by the Upholstry shop and took a picture of the sticker on my 76 automatic.

Right. This confirms that 49-state versions (only a '76 model year "thing") used the exact same stickers for manual and automatic transmissions, although there must have been at least two printings, to account for the 121.8 versus 121.9.

Thanks, Big L!

Steve
