Hello,

I have the LSD that is in the photo and I am going to swap it with the one that is currently in the car. I am totally not sure what it entails. I am assuming I can just drop the subframe and pull the old one out and bolt the new one in... but I am sure I am wrong.

Please school me.

Thanks guys!

Matt

No need to drop the subframe, just the bolts on the holder bracket on the back, the 4 bolts on the bottom, the 4 bolts on the driveshaft, and the 8 (?) allen head bolts on each axle.

You also need to make sure you have the right spacers/threaded flanges, and/or the E21 CVs.  These issues are covered extensively in a write-up on the FAQ:

Edit: I don't know why the 2nd write-up shows removing the allen head bolts from the outer CV joint to pull axles completely, as I didn't have to do that.  If you want more fun though, go ahead.

Post a nice clean shot of one of your current differential's output flange.  So I can see the distance from the connection to the half shaft to the diff body.  If there's almost an inch from the back of the output flange to the dust cover, you have what you need to make this work.  I can walk you through it.

Eeesh.  Nice catch.  Guess we don't see enough e21/e30 covers around here...

Don't take your old one out yet!  That is not a 2002/E21 diff you have there.  It looks like an E30 diff turned up-side-down.  They are NOT a bolt in swap into a 2002.

as it says in the 2nd write up..you don't need to remove the outers.

movieprodw--do you know what ratio your E30 diff is and/or what model E30 it came from?  I'm looking for a good 4.11 limited slip for my 91 318is coupe...
