I'll be 33 this year and my 1600 turned 45 in March.

This one is my 4th in 12 years and I've had it for a little over two years.

Hey Clay, our cars have almost the same build time. Mine turned 45 in March too, built 3/22/67. My vin 1517644 is quite a bit lower than yours, they must have really been crnaking them out fast on the line. Do you know your build date from BMW's records? Oh, and I'm 36. Got the car when I was 30, but my first 02 when I was 27.

My car's build date was 3/27/1967. There must have been a difference in VIN determination because I doubt that BMW built 3501 1600s in five days!

Yeah, they told me 3/22 but I think it was built earlier. Maybe 3/22 was the delivery date to Hoffman in NY. Most of the date stamps on the car's parts are 2/67 and 1/67. Still close!

I was 21 1/2 when my 02 was build in June of 1974. I had already been wanting one for a couple of years at that time. I have been driving BMW's as daily drivers for twenty years now but just got my first 02 a couple of months ago.

  • 1 year later...

I purchased my first 2002 (1973) in 1975 at the age of 23.  I've owned at least 1/2 of a 2002 ever since.  I've owned 7 BMW's in my lifetime.  My favorite was probably the ///M3 I bought new in January 1995.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
