Best Dual Sidedraft Carb Setup?

I have a Spanish- made DCOE that was machined by an inebriated gibbon.

 

The worst offense is a main jet holder that sits several mm lower than the other main holder.

 

The other of the pair is dimensionally close- enough to the Italian version to not matter.

It was all very Italian (lots of hand waving and bruised egos).

The workers felt under-compensated and went on strike.  The owners said "no dice" and closed down the Italian factory leaving most the workers on the curb.  Everything was moved over to Spain.

I think the Spanish guys have been working on there molds (and general qc) as they seem to be a bit cleaner then they once were.  As for the Italian vs. Spanish carbs, with time marching on I'm seeing more and more corrosion on the old Italians (especially if they've been sitting for a while) so in my mind it's a toss-up depending on individual carbs and not "where they're made".  Before too long we will also have to contend with Chinese knockoffs.

Here's my IE manifold.  The booster connection is on the end nearest the fire wall.  Be sure to seal it, it will leak.  But it lends itself to some clean routing..

The plastic bushed linkage ends of the 'top mount' linkage are said to begin to bind after a few heat cycles. I didn't wait around, so I followed Jeff  Deitch's lead and replaced with new all steel bits.  But then that led us to quick release ends at the carbs..  This way we can tweak them independent of one another, and then just click the linkage back on.

I think the Spanish guys have been working on there molds (and general qc) as they seem to be a bit cleaner then they once were.  As for the Italian vs. Spanish carbs, with time marching on I'm seeing more and more corrosion on the old Italians (especially if they've been sitting for a while) so in my mind it's a toss-up depending on individual carbs and not "where they're made".  Before too long we will also have to contend with Chinese knockoffs.

 

Do you know from appr. what time on quality was improved?

 

And of course you´re right: A set of already totally shot Italian Webers doesn´t help you either way.

I'm just getting back to this thread.

Lars is correct about my linkage being a repro Ti unit. It is extremely smooth and I am able to use a very light return spring. It was dead simple to install and set up.

I had to install a new throttle pivot (roller bearing) towards the center of the firewall and reshape the stock throttle rod slightly in order for it to not rub the bell housing. All that was easy. The pedal is very light and smooth (compared to the clunky Weber 32/36 I removed) and heel-toe throttle blips for double clutching are effortless.

I'm interested in checking my original Ti dizzy after reading Lars' advice that it may be advancing at very low rpms and interfering with my idle adjustments. Hmmmmm.

i would find a set of the old italian weber 40's, a short IE manifold for clearance on the booster, some foam sock filters and a weber top mount linkage. add an airtex elec fuel pump, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and don't forget a water neck from an e30 M10, a tii metal water return pipe, assorted gaskets, a bracket for the throttle cable on the pedal box and a few hoses. anyone make a kit with all that?

nor can you get just any dcoe 40's...the internal drillings are different on different models.

This is basically what my car had pre rebuild. I keep it in storage just in case.

An Update:

 

The carbs are on the way.  Got a call from Jim Inglese last week, and he went through them.  Only thing he didn't do was polish the throttle plates.  Which is just fine.  He said they look like brand new carbs.  Total cost was about 

 

Got the linkage/manifold from Ireland Engineering, after my order just sat for a month and I finally called them.  Even after the call, still took a week for them to ship.  

 

Found a weird water neck in my garage.  It has a casting mark from 72 on the bottom, and has a weird port 90 degrees from the main radiator ports.  I'm guessing that it's a tii water neck.  With some searching, I've found 4 water necks in the garage.  2 for a regular 2002, two of the "Tii" style, and no joy on the 318 one that I know is somewhere.  Still going to continue searching for a correct Ti neck.
