  1. Steve, Catalog picture 41/30 - BMW 1502 - 2002 turbo - Body work | Wallothesch WWW.WALLOTHNESCH.COM I´m jumping up and down right now! The first thing ever concerning originality, that I knew better than you, I believe. ?? Yes, a touring definitely had bigger rear fender lips compared to a sedan. Take a look here at the link for W&N´s repair panels page. One can see the difference in fender lips thickness on the pictures for the sedan and the touring panels, too. And of course one can conclude, that there must be a difference, if they´re offering different panels at all. Concerning the initial question for this thread I´d agree, that with looking at the photos I´m afraid of supposedly hearing my bondo-alarm bell ringing. Best regards, Lars.
  2. Hi Uli, es gab 203er mit den alten Scharnieren ohne Drehrad? Best regards, Lars.
  3. Hi Esty, my friend Joachim, who runs BTS Autoteile in Griesheim near Darmstadt, does have repros. They´re not metal as you preferred, though, but original plastic. I think BMW Classic has them, too, but Joachim had his own repro made before BMW did so. I do always buy them at Joachim - Darmstadt is only about 15min from Frankfurt, where I live, so fetching them in person does always include a nice "old BMW talk" as an additional advantage for me. ? Here´s a link to his shop: https://www.bts-autoteile.de/index.php/de/shop/1502-2002-turbo2013-04-23-12-02-57/innenausstattung-instrumente2013-04-23-12-02-57/chromblende-sitz-detail On his shop photo they do look a bit creepy, but I can assure you, that they are not creepy at all in reality - just like new originals. It´s a set containing the chromed plastic part and the black inlay comes as an extra, fitting sticker. I like that, because (not original of course) on old type seats with chromed hinges I do leave the black sticker off - does look more consistent to my eyes. I´m not sure on Joachim´s abilities with English language - if you would want to buy from him, I´d like to offer you my help, if there might be any communication problems. Shipping costs D-US and possible custom fees are something to keep in mind, though. Best regards, Lars.
  4. Hi Ian, if you might get into any problems with André, feel free to send me a PN. I´m not 100% sure, how good André´s abilities in English language are. Best regards, Lars.
  5. The color chart shown above should be from somewhen 1974 on. BMW has named the "diamond pattern" vinyl used on the seat centers of the roundies Flechtnarbe, which is about "braided-grained" directly translated into English. If you do include the pre-68 cars (and for EURO cars that is, US I´m not sure on) there was black, blue, three types of grey, twoandahalf types of brown and red. Red was regularly offered only for the Coupés 2000CS, but on special order was available in 02, too. There are repros around aftermarket with this pattern in different colors, but sorrowly none of the available colors except black fits for BMW 02. For black you should search among the Porsche parts suppliers, as early 911s had exactly the same pattern on their seats - will mostly not be cheap but will also mostly be good quality. BMW does still have repros of that vinyl, too, in black and blue. But the quality isn´t really - what should I say - outstanding. It does somehow look a bit faded or less detailed compared to the old original material. But hey, for blue you don´t have any other option I´d know of. On the photo the upper half is, what you get from BMW today. Lower half is old material from an original seat. Quality difference is the same for black, that is also available at BMW. Best regards, Lars.
  6. The second Recaros should supposedly be E24 to me. The extra return spring on the inner, tunnel side hinge was only very rarely used in very late E21s - you´ll find it more often in E24s. Of course I can´t see, if the springs are still present and working on the photos, but the kink on the inner plastic hinge covers points into that direction. Sliders I don´t know, what car they might be for. But if no "very clever" idiot has whelded them on, just screw them off and put on the ones you need. The Pirelli Matte on one of the Recaros isn´t original but should stem from some former repair. If it is working, leave it, where it is. If it isn´t anymore, it´ll be no prob to return to the older elastic straps like to be seen on the other Recaro (those look tired though and should be replaced, too), as it still is the old seat frame type. Best regards, Lars.
  7. Be careful with those turning wheels for the adjustment of the backrest position (second photo in the trunk). This type of them tends to break faster than you can say "poop". Best regards, Lars.
  8. Thank you very much for your kind words Ed, Steve, Mike, John and Jason. @Andrew: Great to see the E30 seats in like-new shape again! Any progress with choosing the correct 02 sport seats meanwhile? With some time rushing by and some deals here and there, I´d have three Recaro Idealsitz and two Recaro Idealsitz S in storage right now. But all aren´t pairs as you wanted it, all drivers. @Gordon: Great to see your contemporary photos! Have you been at Sembach or Ramstein? Or were there other USAF bases in the area, that I don´t know of? I knew some 02-driving US guys at Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt before it was closed and moved to Ramstein, Spangdahlem and Wiesbaden.
  9. Hi Keith, the owner of the tourings doesn´t like to be in public that much. I´m not allowed to post photos making it possible to identify himself or the location of his collection. The first touring tii wasn´t in an as good survivor shape as the first touring automatic was/is. But slowly but surely at least the body shell becomes healthy again - as I said: work still in progress. Best regards, Lars.
  10. Hi Keith, great story so far. ? Much Freude am Fahren for the future! I´d just quickly like to mention, that the first ever delivered 2000 touring automatic was delivered in bristol, too. I didn´t visit the owner for quite a while now, but according to our regular phone calls automatic no. 1 is still awaiting restoration. He´s got a - for what I´ve seen in my 02 life - medium sized collection of cars and currently work is in progress with touring tii no. 1, which he owns, too (this one isn´t bristol though ?). Best regards, Lars.
  11. Hi, for what I can see the fabric should be available. It´s an original BMW reproduction in great quality, I´ve used it several times when upholstering. Some remarks maybe: - The black is as dark and deep as it was when new. As most still original seats have faded more or less with an only partly repair you´re in 99% gonna see a significant difference in color between still old and replaced fabric. Can only be avoided with redoing seats completely incl. backseat. - Usable width is about 1,40m. You´re gonna need a tad more than 3,5m for redoing stock 02 seats front and rear as original. As for the companies I know one can order only complete meters, you´ll have to order 4m and will have some reserve for later repairs. - AFAIK BMW does not sell fabric through their own webshop (I´ve got no clue why that is). Try W+N instead or Leebmann24, if you can´t get it in the country you live in. For Leebmann I´m not sure, if they do ship overseas (I´m German), better ask before ordering. - For EURO cars this fabric was used for 02s with 2nd TÜ (plastic front grilles, squared backlights). If you got a 1st TÜ roundie (04/71 to 09/73 for EURO cars), 51 92 1 823 036 is the correct fabric to go with (slightly different, can´t describe that in English / should be available, too). 094: 036: Best regards, Lars.
  12. Hello all, some of you might still know me from the days, when I still had some more spare time to show up here on the FAQ more often. With some health problems my parents sorrowly have, I do need to help them since some period now and this turns out to be "a bit" time-consuming. With being logged in right now already, that´s a chance to post an update. Spending some more time in Northern Germany, where my parents still live and I grew up, than in Frankfurt, where I was living the last 25 years, I decided to give some attention to the reason, why I became an 02 madman at all. In February 1974 my father has bought a new malaga 1802, which replaced the used chamonix 1600-2 we had before. 1802s were never officially offered in US, right in the middle of the model range between 1602 and 2002. To say it simple a 2,0 bore paired with a 1,6 crank, 90hp. We´ve kept the car for all the years, I grew up with it. More out of luck than out of reason I´ve bought my own 02, when I turned 18 and got my driving licence (and "some" more 02s since then) and with that saved the 1802 from the mods I´ve mutilated my own early cars with - but hey, I was young and I liked it. ? My father had left the BMW standing still in a garage at my grandma´s house for already some four or five years again, already happened one more time back in the 90s. Since the end of 2019 he is no longer allowed to drive a car for health reasons now. Some day in summer 2020 I couldn`t resist to try, if I couldn´t get the 1802 started with some upfront preparation. Brave as he is, of course he fired up without major problems. But brakes were stuck like hell and some other issues (incl. a bit of rust) needed attention, too. Always short of time and with all my tools in Frankfurt I´ve asked my good old 02 friend Mike - we know each other for about 30 years now and he owns a repair shop meanwhile - if he could help. He could and came with a contemporary towing vehicle: Some time, some repairs and some money later I´ve got the car back with fresh TÜV this year´s spring and already managed to complete some drives in the nearby Harz mountains. And I´ve visited the company the car was bought at back then; Still mostly original except the 7x15 cross-spoke from E30, that already my father has added back in the 90s (was delivered with 5,5x13 Rial cross-spoke which are still present in storage but will need a repaint and new tyres). Best regards and stay healthy, Lars.
  13. I'm living close to Stefan and Joachim from BTS Autoteile (they're mostly co-working with repro parts) and do know both of them personally for long years now. They've tested and measured an early prototype of the nose panel on a still original car that never had an accident. The results were added into tooling and production which should guarantee a good fit. Best regards, Lars.
  14. Yep, Schmidt GFK would have been the one I'd have recommended, if I had seen the thread earlier. That is also where Reiner Ahrend gets some of his stuff from. Quite one of the good guys. I was searching for some E9 flares a while back and without me asking he pointed out a bad fit of the front left fender. He suspected the car to already have had a bigger accident, that they've once taken the molds from. Best regards, Lars.
  15. Jeff, Mr Kaerner has told me some years ago, that it took them some time and test runs before they had found a solution, that they considered satisfying. And it may also depend on who has mounted the bits in the car and when. US cars built up by H&B or N&M regularly show some differences from what I know from over here in Germany (if your car was an US car). TÜV and DOT seem to always have been a bit unequal in their requirements. Best regards, Lars.
  16. Some people are quite a bit ... let's say unhappy ... with seeing some photos and reading some untrue rumors publicly displayed on the interweb. But there's something positive in everything: The owners of original systems will most probably not have to fear any further decrease of worth for their treasures. Best regards, Lars.
  17. Why reproduction, please? As far as I've been told, Alpina has used the cold start injector in the airbox on the very early systems with the sheet metal boxes only. But it didn't work well and so they've made the newer type manifolds and airboxes. Best regards, Lars.
  18. Fully correct. The oval plates were the old german custom plates here until some years ago. Nowadays called export plates, do have rectangular shape, red field on the right showing the date of expiry in it. Best regards, Lars.
  19. The doorside hinge with the lever comes a bit thicker than the tunnelside hinge without lever. That's the reason why the tabs do have different length. Never had a clearance problem with the tunnel when a passenger seat was mounted on driver's side - quite common "easy repair" back then, because the passengers most often came in better conditions. With that the special screws in the lower arm of the hinge come in different length, too - long=door and short=tunnel. Had new ones fabricated some time ago - if someone is in need, drop me a PM (I'm located in Germany, though). The "Gummiauflage" rubber that belongs on the tab protects the chrome (or black paint) and additionally helps reducing play. But it doesn't fully eliminate play, seat backs most always keep rattling a bit. If you adjust the hooks with the inside bowdens, it can help a bit, but if you adjust too tight, you'll have to throw the backs backwards with brute force to get both hooks to lock safely. Best regards, Lars.
  20. If anybody is interested. Historic 3h as a prologue to the 24h on Saturday is in livestream on Youtube right now. 02, E24, E30 plus all the others. Search: ADAC TOTAL 24h Rennen / 24h Classic Best regards, Lars.
  21. Nice! If you do have spare time and a car this weekend, consider to come to Reutlingen-Mittelstadt where the Schwabentreffen 02 meeting will take place. For any further info drop me a PN. There's also taking place the meeting of BMW Club Europe in the area of Lago di Garda this weekend as a friend has told me, who is going to go there. Not too long a drive from Munich, too, and very nice landscape in the area. Best regards, Lars.
  22. Myself I'm not too much into turbos, always preferred the A4s from Alpina. But a friend while fetching the turbo seats I redid for him told me yesterday, that they're currently trying to repro a batch of turbo exhaust manifolds. Lots of 2002turbo experience since the 80s he would be the one for me to ask, should I ever have a question on any detail. I'd estimate he had somewhere in between 50-100 turbos going through his hands over the years - not only a private enthusiast for himself but also an old car's dealer. If there's any interest here, I can try to follow this project and post here, if there might be a successful outcome. Currently they do have the 3D scans ready and are working on a better alloy (not sure if that's the correct translation / I'm german / "Legierung" is the german word) than the original one, as he has told me. Best regards, Lars.
  23. Didn't see the topic earlier. This is what came with the Zender rear spoilers: Turbo rear spoilers came from Kamei and the rubber was a bit softer than with the Zenders. Kamei came both factory turbo and later also aftermarket, aftermarket ones didn't show BMW OEM numbers but Kamei logo and a number of their own (only difference I could recognize while comparing). Installation guide might be helpful for the turbo spoilers, too. Except some spoilers came with studs and others with vulcanized threads - but I've forgotten meanwhile, if the difference was early vs. later or Kamei/turbo vs. Zender. Best regards, Lars.
  24. It's quite crazy to imagine that they drive through there at around 185mph at least in some areas. ? Even for me as a german, who is maybe more used to go let's say 150 on the Autobahn, when there's no speed limit and low traffic, as a typical US citizen would supposedly be. Best regards, Lars.
  25. They should be only maybe a tad wider than E21 Recaros. With that they should fit into an 02. Have been checking them out in the showroom of our local Recaro dealer three or four weeks ago, while I had to wait. Didn't really measure, though. Best regards, Lars.
