Alternators And Brackets

Can anybody help me zero in on where the disconnect is between my alternator and bracket? It obviously does not fit and it missing some hardware. looking at some other pics on this site it appears that the upper mounting points on mine are much further apart. I have a 1973 tii and not sure if I should be sourcing a new alternator or new bracket.

This is my setup

You have a Tii, but the ill-fitting alternator is NOT a Tii piece.  Looks like someone shimmed a normal 2002 alt to hang there.

The width of the mount that fits between he ears down there is the give-away.  You either need a Tii alt, or just the front half swapped onto the one you have.  Maybe someone has a defunct alt that they can sell you to have rebuilt.

Your top picture shows a standard 2002 (non-tii) alternator installed in a tii. The nuts are being used as spacers. It appears there aren't enough or they are too small to fit.

Here is the proper wide casting tii alternator.

There was another thread on this recently. I don't know if it is "common" but several people (including myself) run normal 2002 alternators with the tii bracket using a proper spacer. My '73tii came that way when I bought it in 1983--the spacer appeared to be made just for that purpose, a solid metal cylinder the correct length for interference fit and bored for the bolt.

Ah, here it is:

Anyone have a picture of a tii alternator/mounting assembly?

Ben at 2002ad said that Bosch fits standard alternators with a bushing for tii when they supply an overhauled alternator for tii's...

This is true  i sell lots of them like this

But if you go get an alt from a Subaru Justy, it bolts right up to the tii bracket, and is a ton smaller.  And more durable.

Not really a power upgrade, but they are a lot more sexy.  And you can ditch the external regulator...

Great tip! Anything similar that fits a standard 2002 bracket (or 318 bracket, which is about 1/4" wider than the 2002 bracket)? I've been thinking about getting a mini-Denso one-wire, but have not gotten around to it. Depending on the type and source they are also not cheap! --Fred

When you install a one-wire alternator, wire it so that it is disconnected from the battery when the engine is turned off.

The voltage regulator in the alternator draws about .2 amps and it is always connected to that "one wire", which in a week or 2 will discharge your battery.
