North Hollywood Speedo Comes Through

I've been looking for a nice VDO Series-one clock to round out my gauge cluster for quite a while and was getting a little discouraged.  They've been NLA for a number of years and non-existent on any message board.  Called North Hollywood Speedo for some other gauges and asked if they had the little clock hiding away.  The gentleman who answered the phone said "well why don't we just make you one?  We can make it look extremely close to the original."

Got the gauges yesterday including the little clock and am very very happy.  (while their site doesn't list prices, they were less-expensive than egauges when I asked for a quote)   Now I'm dusting off the tachometer to send it over to be recalibrated for the M20.

Love the series-one gauges with the silver dollar cluster, but for the moment, here's everything mocked up.

I think they're going to get my speedo here this summer. The 20+% off thing is pissing me off... I'll have to give them a call when I buy my new VDO's here soon too!!

Noob question. What exactly does VDO mean? I've been tryin to figure that out for a while lol.

Time to fire up your Google machine!

If we are to believe Wiki:

VDO was founded by Adolf Schindling and the result of a merger between DEUTA (Deutsche Tachometer-Werke GmbH) and OTA Apparate GmbH (Offenbacher Tachometer-Werke GmbH) in the German city of Frankfurt am Main in 1929. VDO stands for "Vereinigte DEUTA - OTA."

In 1991 the company was acquired by Mannesmann. In 1999 Mannesmann was itself acquired by Vodafone and VDO was put up for sale. In 2000 the company was acquired by Siemens AG, Germany's biggest engineering company, and re-branded as Siemens VDO.

On 28 August 2007, VDO was acquired by Continental AG for €11.4 billion. The New York Times noted that Continental's move came at a time when the supplier industry in the United States, the biggest auto market in the world, found itself in worst shape in recent memory.

North Hollywood Speedo is just about the only place I would send a gauge to for restoration. I have used them on numerous occasions for many top dollar vehicles (unfortunately none of which were my own, haha!) and the results were always top notch!

Is Palo Alto Speedometer not a viable option?

http://paspeedo.com/

Ha ha.  PA speedo is a viable option.  I've had both do work, and with both it's excellent.

By the way, both are run by a guy named Hartmut.  One is young, one is old - can't remember which is which.  But - the young Hartmut is actually named after the old Hartmut.

Anyway - it was NHSpeedo that re-faced the speedo in my old Mini to add MPH

and it was NH Speedo that completely refurbished and added LED's to my 911 gauges.

But I think it was PA speedo that did the 2002 cluster

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
