  1. Raj, You might need to put more load on the trailing arm in an attempt to get it higher and compress the Bush somewhat. Just be careful as we are probably talking about enough lift to move that corner of the car so think about how the rest of the car is supported. Looking good by the way!
  2. See the post from Ed here. Make up a pair of wire straps between the brass nuts shown and the heater box stud on the firewall.
  3. Is there any manufacturers markings on the underside (or on the top for that matter)?
  4. You might want to consider a leak down test. Perhaps you have had some issues getting your rings bedded in and it’s showing up as blow by?
  5. Not so much that’s obviously wrong (apart from the missing filter lid). It is worth pointing out that someone has obviously modified the car so it might be a good idea to check the quality of some of that work. A modiifed radiator with what looks like an overflow tank. A fuel filter and maybe pressure regulator is fitted (looks like a good Mangoletsi unit). I am guessing that it has an electric pump installed at the tank. Some kind of electronic ignition box on the far inner wing? A foam filter installed on the engine breather (this is liable to coat everything with oil). Weirdly it it looks like you have a 12 fuse sticker but a 6 fuse fusebox. You have a long ground wire between the alternator case and the body (this only needs to be short and run to be terminated on the engine under one of the upper timing cover bolts. This needs to be substantial gauge as well. A few few minor things to tidy up it would appear and definitely a good start. Welcome to the club!
  6. BMW have made a short video to commemorate the retirement of the CEO of Mercedes Benz. Who says the Germans have no sense of humour... It's the last day as CEO of Mercedes Benz and the long deserved retirement of Dieter Zetsche lies ahead. To the applause of numerous employees, he takes off his company ID, says his goodbyes and leaves the company for the very last time. This could all be a very sad day, wouldn't it be for the one thing waiting at home.
  7. @Conserv will be here shortly to correct me but I think you need to take into account calendar years Vs model years which may start in September. Pretty sure that early on in the calendar year of 1974 they were still making roundies even if they were still 1973 MY. The best bet is to get hold of the VIN and send it on to the BMW heritage email address (which I am hoping Steve can remember as well when he gets here). Aside from the info that BMW will send back about the car (free of charge!) the number should be able to tell us whether it was round or square coming from the factory. A rear end swap (actually just the centre panel is different is a definite possibility but let’s identify the car first.
  8. Any 14mm crush washer will do. Take your plug down to your local car part shop and see what they have.
  9. Have you emailed her directly? I will PM you her address
  10. Anyway, this thread is still waaay better than some we have had recently.
  11. You are absolutely correct. I just meant that people shouldn’t blindly start putting ethanol based fuels in your car without understanding the issues. Holden (GM in Australia) make a range of V8s designed to run on E85 (85% ethanol) and they are extremely powerful, taking advantage of the high octane nature of the fuel.
  12. What about something like this? You just need to drill a hole and add a rubber grommet

  14. You are absolutely right. Octane is all about actually suppressing the tendency of fuel to ignite. Too high (versus your dynamic compression ratio) just means that your ignition may struggle to ignite and burn it cleanly. Run the lowest you can get away with (noting that you don’t really want to run anything with ethanol in it and sometimes ‘premium fuels’ give other benefits such as cleaning).
  15. Just check that your fuel of choice actually has octane rated in RON, it could be in MON or PON or AKI which are all different scales for the same thing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating
  16. Wow, they certainly do look wonky. Reading this on iPhone Safari puts your photos literally all over the screen behind the text fields.
  17. 380mm + seems to be the sweet spot. A pet hate of mine is when the indicator / wiper stalks project out way beyond the diameter of the wheel. If I absolutely had to run a smaller wheel then I would need to alter the stalks to be shorter (somehow).
  18. Don’t new DCOEs have idle air bypass screws now for help setting the idle? What kind of manifolds are you using? Any chance that the carbs are not level front to back?
  19. This has been covered heavily in the past. Welcome to the board.
  20. Probably doesn’t matter what it is but the one in the OP’s post looks like it has a spark plug style crush washer whereas the adapters have O rings. This would tend to imply that it was designed for long term installation and therefore an ‘anti-fouler’. This has no practical impact on the outcome, which remains the same, but archeology is fun some times.
  21. The top one will provide battery voltage direct to the coil to bypass the ballast resistance in the ignition when starting.
  22. You should be able to pull the wiring all in one go. The smog wiring was ran in its own sub-harness in a blue sheath. You just need to watch out that you aren’t pulling the switched 12v feed / ballast resistance wire to the coil. Search for ‘smog delete’ on here, it’s been covered many times.
  23. They are very effective visibility wise but no doubt illegal in some places (definitely would be in the UK or Australia), saw lots when I lived in Thailand. I would check their legality where you are first. Don’t (some) F1 cars have them? I would be worried about failure modes where you are left with no light. Maybe don’t skimp on the cheap ones...
