2760007 was Oct. '71, so 0048 would've been very soon after. That and 0007 is alive and well again after a long slumber!

First, Tom, the tii looks absolutely great!  It's wonderful to know it's back in regular use -- whatever "regular use" may be for a 44-year-old tii.  I realize the blue license plate is modern but how'd you/your father manage to get THAT tag?  Cool!

And, because you've previously published it, 2760007's manufacturing date was October 20, 1971.  I, too, expect 0048 to follow (very) shortly after 0007 -- even, conceivably, the same day.

Congrats to you and the family on having one of the first U.S.-spec tii's, and one of very few still in the original owner's hands, on the road and looking great!

Best regards,

Steve

Mom and Dad's 2002 TII plate dates from 1978 when 7 letter plates were first available for non commercial applications. There's a neat story about a nice DMV employee helping them get that plate. :)

I just received this from the Archive Group:

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2760048 was manufactured on October 21st, 1971 and delivered on November 08th, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Atlantik, paint code 041.

Wunderbar!

Thanks, Greg,

I generally assume that September 1 marks the beginning of a new BMW U.S. model year, at least during the '02 era.  And I still believe that that's often correct.  But I've seen at least two BMW VIN's, one with an August 30th date, the other with an August 31st, that say that -- depending on what day of the week September 1 might be -- a U.S. model year could start even earlier than September 1.  On the other hand, both the 1972 and 1973 U.S. tii models appear to be examples of models for which production commenced later, October in both cases.  And the 48th 1974 U.S. tii (2780048) had a manufacturing date of November 19, 1973, suggesting to me that 1974 U.S. tii production did not begin until November.

Why?  I don't know.  Did BMW prefer to get the non-tii U.S. models rolling off the line before dealing with a specialty vehicle like the tii?

Regards,

Steve

Thank You!

Here's a shot of the car in Aug '74 at the very first Monterey Historic Races, with its original plate. That's how the car was delivered to the dealer from Hoffman, with the Anco bars, Shelby Cal 500 wheels and Ansa Sport exhaust. That's also Mom in the driver seat. I was born just three months later. Other pictures on the roll show her baby bump.

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay, so, as per other posts, I appear to be going into full-on geek mode about certain things. I just downloaded the PDF of the 2002 parts catalog from the tii register, and discovered this thread. I'll post my '72 and '73 tiis later.

I have a question for you '72tii guys.

The parts book shows the first '73tii (pointy overriders) to be 2762630, so anything before that is a "model year 72" with (ahem) pre-2 1/2 mph bumpers (rear bumper up against body, front bumper sticking out no further than the hood).

The parts book shows the first metal intake plenums to be at 2761944, so anything earlier than that has plastic intake plenums.

So those tiis from 2761944 through 2762629 should have metal plenums and close-in bumpers, right? Those are actually the "late '72" cars, right? Does anyone have one?

I've always thought of "early '72tiis" as having plastic intake plenums and close-in bumpers, and "late '72tiis" as having both metal plenums and stood-out bumpers with pointy overriders, but those are actually "model year" '73s that were built and/or titled as '72s, aren't they?

Damn I'm learning a lot this week...

Hey - scanning this in between meetings, but Paul figured out that the US cars switched the plenums back and forth a few times.  He posted that a couple of times.

Thanks Scott. I'll look that up. I didn't see that in my first attempt at looking at the parts book, but I'm a noob.

I'd check directly with Paul.  I'm pretty sure the change back to plastic isn't documented in the parts book--more of a case of "yeah, these metal runners do work a lot better, but we only ordered a trial run of 200 of them so lets go back to plastic until more come in.  The biergarten is going to fill up if we waste any more time talking about this."

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
