When you see another 2002 while driving your 2002.

When I purchased my first BMW 56 years ago, I could drive from one border of Oregon to another and not see another 02.  Now most of the 2002's are garage queens and I rarely see one on the road.

FYI.  My first car was a 47 Studebaker and it had hillholder technology.

When I had my 335i convt I would wave like an idiot when I saw a 2002 and they seemed to appreciate it.

I'm still disappointed, but no longer surprised, when I pull up in my 2002 next to a modern BMW at a light and they are oblivious to the ancestral magnificence that is the 2002.

Last summer I had my '68 1600-2 out.  Stopped at a light, a modern BMW pulled up next to me.  The guy was revving his engine, then rolled his window down and started talking: "what year is that, '84?  '85?".  I replied "'68".  He looked at my like I was joking with him, and asked again: "what year?"  I replied "1968".  He looked away, kept revving his engine.  The light turned green and he squealed his tires through the intersection.

I still think he doesn't believe me - but I really don't care.

And I wave at any BMW E30 or earlier.  :)

clearly you've never owned a subaru, Mr. Bert 😉

I had a Subaru in college.  The only car that left me stranded on the side of the highway at 2am when I lost the timing chain.  I had to hitchhike to a Howard Johnson's to use the phone to call AAA.  Didn't have *any* cash to pay for the cup of coffee, and had to fix the motor in my apartment parking lot.

Yeah, I had a Subaru.

Yeah, I had a Subaru.

A car in college? You were the lucky one! I had a Schwin bicycle and a pair of Nike running shoes. 🙂

Cars are gonna be cars and break down at the worst times. And, most timing belts/chains don't last forever. I've had two go out on me over the years: The first was in a '74 Mercury Capri and the second was in a 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback Si - both great cars that kept me safe on the roads for years after I fixed 'em. Sorry to hear that your Subaru experience was less than ideal.

that technology is alive and well (and F'n brilliant) in my 2009 manual tranny Impreza hatch!

Our first car we bought as a married couple was an Subaru DL.  It was so cheap it didn’t have a model name.  “DL”.  It had AC and a cassette deck w/two speakers.  It had the hill holder.  Great little car that we kept for a long time.

But wait, there’s more hill holder goodness!

Our 2012 VW Jetta GLI has a hill holder.

To bring it back to BMW, so did my 2008 M3.  Which was shocking.

The EA81 engine doesn't have a timing chain (or belts), it has gears linking the cams and crank.

Yours had the cool third-eye light hiding behind the flip-up emblem in the grille.  (mine doesn't)

I put a BMW 2002 resonator and muffler in my '84 Subaru GL 4x4 wagon.  It sounds a bit throatier in that car than it does on my 2002.  The Subaru is my designated salt-car and has the rust to prove it.  It's been incredibly dependable for a $600 car that's now up to 265k miles.

It has the hill-holder feature, but it isn't hooked up.  Starting off on a hill is just part of the fun when driving a stick.  It's a brilliant design though.

It's about as rare to see another of that series Subaru on the road now as it is to see a 2002, but when I do happen to see one, we usually wave.  Rusty as it is, mine still receives compliments.

There are still a few 2002s being driven in this part of the country and a fair number of e21s.  I get waves from either car, typically; but also from a variety of similar-vintage cars.

My 35+ year recollection has faded, but the misery caused by that Subaru has only intensified.
