Is E21 oil pan the same as 02? If so, why is pickup different?

2002 is rear sump

(thus long pickup)

and E21 is front sump

(thus short pickup).

OK thanks all. Now that I've dragged the e21 out onto the floor, I see the bump at the front.

The pans interchange between applications, as do the oil pumps.  Use the pan and oil pump pickup from your 2002 engine on a 320i engine you're gonna install in a 2002...works just fine.  But don't forget the bracket that attaches to one of the main bearing caps that supports that long 02 oil pump pickup--without the bracket vibration will eventually cause that long aluminum pickup to crack/break.

the E21 pan doesn't fit in a 2002.

 

Without some rather significant massaging.

 

Or so I recall, from about 1996.

 

Haven't tried it since...

Toby is right.  The 320I pan has to be modded to fit around subframe of a 2002.

I used a BFH to make mine fit on my ITB car.  G

That's what I said.  a 2002 oil pan--with the 02 oil pump--will fit onto a 320 block, so that said 320 block can be installed in a 2002

Ah- applications as in, is it applied to a 320 or a 2002.
