Lbs of Freon in a Behr system

Recommended Posts

Your mechanic should have a gauge set up that will tell when he gets to the correct operating pressure. I should add you can't mix refrigerants if you have a r12 system hold on it's going for about $118 for a 12 oz container if you can find it.

I seem to have a leak in my Behr ac system. How many lbs of freon or whatever should my mechanic put in the system?

thanks,  steve

Steve,

I believe they used to specify 2.2 lbs. of R12 Freon, with a new Behr system for an ‘02. But Son of Marty’s approach sounds more relevant for a system that’s being repaired, and partially filled.

Steve C.

THIS IS WRONG: AS YOU’LL SEE BELOW, THE CORRECT ANOUNT IS 22 OUNCES!

I've seen anywhere between 2-2.4lbs. For what it's worth, I just charged my clardy system with a modern parallel condenser. I used about 28oz of R12 and it blows right at 38deg with good pressures.

Some of the underhood sticker sets include Behr A/C Freon stickers. I’ve seen at least one version of these stickers on real live period cars. I’ve suspected that another version was borrowed from an e9 or e12.

Following, from a rusty 1972 tii, the first photo appears to show a very authentic Behr A/C sticker, for an ‘02.

22 ounces!

The second photo came with a set of under hood stickers. This is the one I suspect of having been printed for an e9 or e12.

2.86 pounds, or… 46 ounces?

Best regards,

Steve

The Behr air conditioning installation manual is available in pdf form on the 2002tii.org website. If I recall correctly, it has the freon charge amount in the instructions. And remember, if yyou are going to use R134 instead of R12 you only fill the system with 80% r134 than the listed r12 amount.

You’re absolutely correct, Tom! But… I‘ve been unable to download it from the tii register website for the last month — hope it’s not gone forever — and I can’t find either of my printed copies!

Best regards,

Steve

Thank you, Tom,

That link worked for me!

So 22 ounces it is. That 46-ounce sticker is looking more out of place than ever!

Best regards,

Steve
