Can't get 5th, linkage hitting shift platform

Hi all,

 

I recently replaced my shifter bushings. 1 - 4 feel wonderful but I am having a really hard time getting 5th. I can see from below that the selector rod is hitting the shift platform. The rod is on the passengers side, so that looks correct. 

 

Any suggestions? The box section of the shift platform looks pretty solid, I don't think I could effectively dent it enough to clear the selector rod. I'm sure a Blunttech or IE 5-spd conversion platform would fix my problem, but they are rather spendy.

Is that a new clip? A simple C clip there would give you a mm or two more clearance.

looks like that area has had some clearance ground in already. Grind in some more if necessary with a mini grinder and rotary burr. Looks beefy enough to handle it.

Great point. I used these clips because they were so easy-on easy-off, but you're right, they are adding some width. I'd forgotten that they were originally c-clips.

Good thought, but I'm pretty sure it's in correctly. The kink angles the top of the shifter towards the rear of the car.

Looks to me like you have an older- style platform with the newer style shift lever-

or something otherwise custom.

 

At this point, your EASIEST fix is to get a long- throw shifter for an E30

off of epay ($20) and use that.  It'll lower

the linkage (shortening your shift) and also

give your more clearance.

Hmmm. If I swapped it so the circlips were on the passenger side then I think the selector rod would hit even sooner. I'll play around with it though. I thought I saw it mentioned the rod should be on the passenger side, though, at least for a 5 spd conversion.

Thanks for checking. It might be OK to put the rod on either side with the IE setup. I think I'm only having this issue because of what Toby pointed out, Old shift platform with newer shifter lever. I'm pretty sure that if I go to a c-clip and grind a bit away from the platform I'll be all set. 50% of the time it goes in OK with a bit of jiggling so I'm not far off.
