Geez...

Now every time I see a couple salvage buses and a six-wheel road grader, I’m going to be thinking “Alpina Borrani?”..... ?

Think you're gonna need new tires, though!  And be sure to check those rivets holding rim to center.  If they are in fact steel, all that sitting outside may have deteriorated the rivets and/or the seal between rivet and rim.  You can see some corrosion on the rim-to-center joint; you want to make sure the rims are air-tight before you fit new tires.

Yep, the tires are toast.

Once i I get the tires off, will inspect the rivets carefully, thx.

Here is one more stamp I found on the inside edge of the wheel. In a few months, these will be 50 years old!

Been thinking that I’ll be putting these on the car at some point, probably when I redo my front/rear suspension.

Last year I found a set of Alpina front struts, shown below on the right. Still looking for the inverted Bilstein rears, though. Let me know if anyone has a set they would like to sell!

Thought I would provide an update on these wheels while they are being media blasted.

Extracted the center emblem/cap on the one wheel that had it. It was held in place by a metal clip156CDC7D-06D4-441D-A6DD-E620C5032ED0.thumb.jpeg.55914214412bcda189e6a1e2516b236d.jpeg

The Alpina logo on this is the early version... with a different carb and cam shaft than the modern logo. The font used in the earlier logo for the Alpina lettering is also different. Did some digging and found an outfit that had the exact replica in the correct size. Bought a set of these and will figure out how to secure them in place on the wheel.

However, the emblem on the ‘72 Alpina tii touring that sold recently on BAT has the modern emblem..

Which brings up a couple of possibilities:

1) These are correct for the touring as the logo change for Alpina happened between 1969 (date on my wheels) and the 1972 touring?

2) These are replacement emblems/caps and they fitted the touring with the incorrect cap with the modern logo?

Anyone know now when the logo changed for Alpina??

Vince,

The touring’s rims have clearly been repainted and new Borrani stickers and Alpina center caps were applied — the stickers and caps are readily available on eBay and other forums and are generally (always?) aftermarket.

Given the “Chamonix” paint sticker randomly stuck onto the touring after its most recent repaint (it is a factory Polaris metallic car that has been re-painted in Polaris), I doubt any research whatsoever went into whether the Borrani stickers and Alpina caps reflected a correct 1972 date...

I believe that, post-B.A.T., the touring is in more appreciative and sensitive hands. ?

I know I’ve seen a discussion of the Alpina logo changes on the German forum. I believe a slide throttle replaced the Weber carb. I’ll bet someone like markmac, on this forum, has additional information regarding the change of the logo.

Regards,

Steve

Love those wheels! Great history and a fun story on resurrection from behind the barn.

Thank you for updating.

Completely unexpected, but just found these. Looks like exactly what was on the ‘72 Alpina tii touring that sold on BAT not too long ago.

Bellissimo!

Will take some time to think about what to do with them.

The Borrani sticker is the right one. This is what Borrani told me: "We have only 2 classic logos: Prior of 1960 with Carlo Borrani SpA, after with Ruote Borrani-Milano". Borrani sent me graciously OEM stickers. Those guys are top notch.
I will buy the proper Alpina Center Cap.

Thanks for the info.
