'69 sliding type joint to CV joint conversion ?

Partners;

I have a 1969 '02 that has the older sliding type joint with the long neck differential.  Just over a year ago I replaced the bellows but I probably messed up by putting in synthetic 90W oil.  The bellows just gave out and looked like they were rotted which I assume is from the synthetic oil.   Can I change from the sliding type joint to a normal CV joint as a straight swap?  If so, what year CV joint would work?

Thank you in advance.  Kaz  VIN 1663687

On mine it was a straight swap. The diff flanges and hubs were double drilled to accept the CV's.

Not sure if they are all the same but, the ones I used are from a late model.

I’m also anxious to know this procedure to change out the old style on my ‘67 CS.

From what I see on mine, the bolts don’t exactly match up... perhaps I’m wrong.

See if your flanges have more holes drilled than the shaft is using.

This may be tuff upgrade on a '67 though. If you don't have the "extra" holes you will need

hubs at the wheel end and diff flanges at the other. Don't have any idea if those are interchangeable on a '67.

Anyone else notice the holes for the sway bar... in '67!

I did a little digging on Realoem. Your diff flanges (by my research...) share the same P/N as the longnecked '02; 33131200614. If your output flanges look like mine then the CV should bolt up.

The stub axle for an '02 (using data for my '68) is shown to be P/N 33411116776. The stub for a mid '67 2000C is shown to be 33411116775. Perhaps the change in P/N for the stub is just the extra drillings to accommodate the now common CV?

This is a stub from my '68.

Zinz- the symmetrical halfshafts have the same P/N between the 2000 and '02 so... you should be able to mount up modern CV shafts to your 2000 provided you have the proper holes in your flanges. If you don't and want some parts to play with let me know... I'm swapping my car to a shortneck setup. I still have that Blue manual as well- package deal. ;-)

Thanks for the homework, Jake.  I have some 1/2 shafts in the stash and will break out the wrenches and see how they mate up.  Hopefully, it will be a simple swap...

I'll PM you on the blue manual

Great posts partners.  Any suggestions on what part number I should be hunting for on the CV Joint half shaft to replace my old sliding type joint shafts?

Also, does anyone agree that the reason why my sliding joint shaft rubber boots/caps failed so quickly was due to synthetic gear oil?

If your flanges have just six holes in the 3 + 3 pattern, you need to find similar CV joints. Good luck. May be easier to find 10 hole flanges.

....super

Mine are 6 hole flanges. :(

On my ‘67 1600-2, on which I probably put 40,000 miles (1975-76), I never had a half-shaft boot last more than 8,000 miles. I didn’t use any synthetics. The boots were simply not up to the job.

Regards,

Steve
