Q/R steering box

     I just discovered that the box in my car is of the quick ratio variety. After doing some searching it seems that some like them and some don't but I'm curious what the chances are that this is original to the car as it is not a Tii. I'm wondering if the 672 on the tag is a manufacturing date, the car is a 73.

Someone more awake than I can verify this... but I think the "177" is a quick box, and the "171" is a standard box. There was another quick box number also, but I can't recall it from memory. 

 

Count the turns from lock to lock.

Yes, this is a June 1972 steering box.  You mention your car is a 1973 model.  Is it, per chance, a fairly early 1973, i.e., September 1 through December 31, 1972?

Ah crap, now I'm embarrassed (and a little sad), when I looked at the numbers in the car it looked to me like 177, now upon looking at the pic closer it is obviously a 171...carry on.

Don't be embarrassed. We all learn as we go. Besides... quick ratio boxes are cool and all...but not $1300.00 cool.

177 is the number you want for the quick ratio.  Some of these were painted a burnt orange color from the factory but some were not.  I had one years ago from a 2002 automatic parts car (of all cars!) and it was painted the orange color.

I would never spend that kind of money for a Q/R box, the thing is I knew the number was 177, I must have looked at it 3 or 4 times and thought I lucked out. I never even looked at the pic when I posted, it was just to show I wasn't dreaming. It was a case of seeing what you want to see I guess.

The other lucky number is "155" at the end.

I actually had a guy offer me $1000 for mine one time, plus he'd find a replacement and install it.

There are few things more unpleasant on a street car than a quick-ratio box.

I have a QR box (suffix 177, installed in the '80s) in the 2000CS... but it is coupled to a giant, 420mm bus wheel.  It actually works out very well; I would imagine a QR box and a 320mm Petri would be quite the workout, especially at low speeds...

Just to update Max's original numbering info on an old thread - early NKs also had 152 numbering and had the normal -4 turns lock to lock:

 

149 or 152 = standard ratio box from early car

171 = standard ratio box from later car (no gearing difference between the 149 and 171)

177 = QR box used on most 02's

151 or 155 = QR box used on very early 02's and some neu-klasse sedans (interchangeable with other 02 boxes).

175 is a right hand drive but they you would probably spot it if you had one installed in your car

Anyone know the paint code color for that orange? Mine needs a refresh now that I'm looking at it
