There's a link to a YouTube video here somewhere on the FAQ, showing a detailed rebuild of a Porsche CV which was/is practically the same as our toys.

I see boot clamp in your picture now after looking at it more closely. I am not saying aftermarket boots are as good as OEM ones, but in my opinion the reason aftermarket get torn prematurely is because of clamp type comes with boots. I replaced mine with followings and it has been five years with new issue.

Is there any alternative to spending another $23.62 to buy a pair of these Lisle 30800 CV Boot Clamp pliers to properly tighten the boot clamps?

nope, those VW boots are for the swing axles, not the CV boots.

Those boots actually seal the axle housing, with a shaft spinning inside.  No rotation of the boots themselves, just flexing.

VW switched from swing axles to CV joints in '69, hence the earlier dates with the boots in the link above.

Okay, I'll bite...

If the VW split boots for swing axles mentioned above won't fit the 02, does anyone know of a split boot made for other cars' CV joints that would fit the 02?

Sure as heck would be a lot easier to change boots if you didn't have to rip everything apart ...

Just axin'...!

I don't think there is such a thing, given the gyrations the boots have to go through.

 

Our rear CV boots have a much easier life than the ones on a front wheel drive car, which have to endure steering as well.

 

Speaking of those, I have one in the box in the back of my Subaru, waiting for me to get up the gumption to get messy.

 

Removal and disassembly seems like a hassle; but if it has been open, it could be contaminated, so cleaning and re-greasing seems appropriate.

I bought the official BMW boot repair kit (33-21-9-067-909).

 

I have a few questions since the kit came with no instructions or directions:

 

(1) the kit came with a second 6-bolt flanged cap (upper left in the photo).  What is this for?

 

(2) the kit came with "Hylomar Universal Jointing Compound" (small yellow tube in the upper right of the photo).  Is this for sealing the small end of the boot to the shaft and the flange that attaches to the CV joint housing?

 

(3) the kit didn't seem to come with the "paint can" sealing lids that seal the CV joint housing on the side away from the half-shaft.  Am I to re-use the old lids?

 

Perhaps some of my confusion is related to the fact that this kit supersedes the original kit for the 2002.

 

Is there a written document somewhere that describes how to use the parts in the kit?

I'm going to assume that the covers replace the paint can lid, and the other side is an additional cover (not needed).  If they fit, that's good.  I re-used my paint can lids. For fun I put the date on the inside with paint.  The next owner that rebuilds the CVs will find that and know when they were last serviced.

 

I presume that the hylomar sealant is for the rubber boot to metal seal.  Hylomar is highly resistant to oils, lubricants and fuels.  Should create a good seal along with the clamps.  Not really necessary though, if the clamps are good.  Where's the large clamp?

 

Big bag of grease to fill the CVs.

If you don't use the hylomar don't through it away.  It's expensive to buy (if you can find it) and it's great for sealing fuel lines and high-pressure oil fittings.
