Wailing Noise from Trans Tunnel/Firewall

Utah02

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Anyone have an idea of what this noise is. It's a little hard to get on video sorry. It's a wailing noise coming from the transmission tunnel and firewall area. It's not a constant thing but it happens very often as of late. It does sync with my speed so if i am slowing down then the wining slows down. happens mostly when I'm at a constant speed or slowing down and doesn't sound very good. Anything helps

Thanks in advance

Colby

A failing center support bearing will often signal its imminent demise by making the wailing noise when cold, the wail ceasing abruptly as the bearing warms up a bit--only to start wailing again the next time you start out in the cold.

When it's wailing all the time, it's saying (in humpback whale language) "replace me before I seize and really make a mess."

cheers

I had a very similar noise and it was the center bearing.

I had a hell of a time getting the drive shaft castle nut off and in process ended up bending the ujoint, which subsequently led to finding a driveshaft and a 5 speed and doing the 5 sp upgrade. Significantly more time and money than just the center bearing :)

To replace the CSB means you need to drop out the drive shaft. Might as well change the Guibo while you are at it if the Guibo state is poor or unknown.

Once you have the drive shaft out you need to seperate it in half by undoing a large nut inside the u joint. This will require a skinny 24mm spanner (Or a spanner ground down to fit) to slip inside the U joint.

See previous post from buckeye with photos.

MARK THE 2 HALVES OF THE DRIVE SHAFT before undoing them as they need to go back together exactly the same as the drive shaft is balanced. Just paint a mark on the 2 halves of the drive shaft in alightment and make sure the 2 marks are still in alignment when you reassemble the drive shaft.

A few years ago I did it the easy way.  I called Mesa Performance in Costa Mesa, CA.  They had a ready-to-install refurb/rebuilt driveshaft.  Easy out with the old, easy in with the refurb.  I also replaced the guibo, no reason not to.

Cheers,

Colby,

I just did mine tuesday evening, just remember to mark driveshaft and if your exhaust comes off easily like mine did I was done in an hour and a half, granted I did have a lift and bolts with very little corrosion.

Good luck!!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
