Driveshaft Machine Shop Needed

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a driveshaft shop fairly close to Central Pennsylvania that can shorten, weld a new flange and balance my driveshaft. Has anyone had any experience with someone in the Mid-Atlantic area? Thanks.

I had Marietta Joint and Clutch in Marietta, OH do mine, but I wouldn't call them 'good' at all.  They're probably a pretty long haul from you, and they never could get the length to what I told them.  It was only ~$60, though.

You're honestly probably better off buying/shipping one from IE or Aardvarc, if you want one set up perfect.

I ran across a small shop that can do two-piece driveshaft work in Lorton, VA.  I have not used them but picked up a business card:

Drive Line Specialist

8397-B Terminal Road

Lorton, VA 22079

703-339-3880

"Specializing in repair, modification, balancing of driveshaft assemblies, differentials and transfer cases."

If nothing, maybe they can recommend a shop closer to your location.

I use Driveline service in portland oregon.  they are a long time Roundel advertiser.  gone are the days when a shop needs to be near you.  just call them up, tell them what you want, they make it and ship it to you in a week. (the last one i got from them came the next day!  they have shops around the country.)  they send the driveshaft ready to install with a new center bearing in a nice box. you just stick your old driveshaft in the box, send it back and get your core charge back.  ez.  great product and service.

I just used Driveline Service of Portland a few weeks ago and I live in Chicago. They no longer do BMW driveshafts in house as their guy who did them died. They acted as a broker and arranged the deal with a shop in CA. I shipped my shaft to CA and the next day they sent me one back. Fit perfect and looks good.

Highly recommend these guys.  They rebuilt my already shortened D/S.  They are also longtime advertisers in the Roundel...They even gave me a military discount!!  They are well versed in modifying 2002 drive shafts for the 5 spd conversion.

  • 5 years later...

this thread is a cool 5 years old ... but wondering if there are still a set of preferred vendors for shortening and balancing a 4-bolt flange driveshaft?!

driveshaft is in Austin. TX ... We've contacted local shops that can easily shorten and properly re-weld ... but none in ATX or SanAntonio that have the fixtures to balance this particular 2-piece driveshaft.

Are there any shops that come well recommended? local not NEARLY as important as quality ... we've come to find that rotational balance of nearly everything is critical to our HNV ... since we no longer have the ICE making a few hundred explosions per second...

thanks

I'm in the same boat - except since I'm using a Getrag 240 I need someone who can "make to measure", as most that have them already fabbed up only have them for use with a Getrag 245.

I'm doing a 240 swap also, I bought a driveshaft from an 84 318I (E30 with M10 engine) specifically to get ahold of a 3 bolt flange to convert/shorten my 2002 shaft.

Now that I look at it and do some measurements I'm pretty sure the 318i shaft I purchased for parts will fit. It has a splined sliding shaft so there is some wiggle room on length. This is not new of course, M42 swap guys know all about this. You do have to fab up a bracket/mount for the center bearing about 7 inches aft of where the 02 center bearing mounts.

Joints in this shaft are good and center bearing is easily changed. I'm going for it, considerably cheaper and you retain your original stock shaft.

Bluntech and IE can do 240 driveshafts as well as 245

Call Terry Sayther's Automotive in ATX and talk to them. They might not be able to do what you need, but will know who can. Terry is an old time BMW guy and still active in the classic BMW community.

If you do this be mindful of any small metal plates plug welded to the shaft for balance (both halves may have them). I shortened my driveshaft successfully but did so from the bearing side of the front section to avoid touching the weights. Lost of measuring to assure everything stays perfectly in alignment is key. Welds must be deposited very evenly.

It was a 5+ hour job start to finish.
