Alpina and Borrani (CMR) 13” Steel Rims

Well, I hate to see my favorite thread go dormant although I have no "new" information I thought I would share my latest addition. I found a matching production date and size set of four that exactly match my current set of CMR, 3/72,  R-561, 6x13 JJ. They need some work but I couldn't resist having 8 matching Borranis, so here they are. Steve, what about the color, I think it's maybe a little too beige-ish to be original? John

Yes, they've definitely been re-painted: too "spray-can" and too beige!  A great find nonetheless.  Were they already in the U.S., or did you import them?

Imported from Germany. Which was a PITA now that the paperwork has gone electronic. Had to pay a duty for the first time. I agree on the finish - it's rough. I will probably just let them sit for awhile before I have them restored, too many other little projects to work on. Thanks as always for your input!

In September 2005 I purchased a used set of four ALPINA  steel rims measuring 13x5 from an Ebayer in Haydenville MA 

 

They are in very good used condition and remain in original painted finish.

 

The 13x5 dimension is stamped in the hub as is the R1-439 part number. On the inside of the rim they are stamped again with the 13x5 J dimension and also with the date 9  70. Note that the digit seven is "crossed" in European fashion.

 

The wheels came with the original chromium plated lug nuts and center caps with ALPINA emblems intact. 

 

BTW I enjoy all the updates to this research oriented thread.

Must agree that those old chrome lugs are nicely detailed. They are better than the ones in the image below of another set which I suspect date much earlier as there are no markings evident on the rims. That being said, the lugs do appear to be the same as the lugs in the ALPINA publicity shot shown above. The lugs in the publicity photo don't neck down to the nipple top. Note the Michelin XAS tire shown in that photo.

Yes, indeed: those are very good looking lug nuts, I must say! And, of course, the rims and center caps are expectedly beautiful. I see very few 5" Alpina steelies. Come to think of it, I've seen precious few 5 1/2" Alpina steelies over the last few years, but certainly more of the 5 1/2" width than of the 5" width. Thank you for posting them here. Are they all of the same, or close, manufacturing dates?

 

(And thank you, John, for letting Flunder know that we're not the type of enthusiasts that could be satisfied with a glimpse of a date stamp! ?)

Well, maybe not everyone who bought Alpina steel wheels for their 02 intended them for use with snow tires!

 

Here they are in the pits (looks like the 'ring) on a very early 16oo perhaps shod with Dunlop Racing tires.
