  1. You need to use a proper bore gauge, measuring at at least three points down the bore and at 90 deg. as I recall. BMWs work at close tolerances. I would haul the block and the pistons to a reputable machine shop and get some accurate measurements.
  2. Thanks. Maybe my eyesight but I don't see BMW listed. Is that an old link?
  3. Fuel pump push rod. That fits the noise better than valves, etc.. Maybe the end of the rod in the pump needs some grease.
  4. It doesn't sound like a valve, or timing chain slap. Too random i think. It sounds familiar but damned if I can think of what it is. hard to think of something that would be changed by mixture screw.
  5. Acetone would be my choice. Use a mild 3M scouring pad (with appropriate protection). Cheaper than the other lenes.
  6. Where did yo find the mahle catalogue?
  7. Keeping in mind that the pistons have to match the head style (121, E12, etc)
  8. Thanks for the response. So there is one empty hole on the bell housing if that bracket is off the 1.8 block?
  9. Not to mention the main bearing caps.
  10. Anybody monitoring this forum?
  11. OK, on my 2000CS, there is a mounting point attached to the battery tray. I replaced the cable that runs from there to block (generic cable with hole on each end). One end attaches to bracket attached to starter (and thus the block). If you don't have that bracket, any one of those unused threaded holes on the block would work - just clean surface.
  12. Head to local auto parts store for generic battery cable (s). Figure out the length you need. I did positive cable as well.
  13. I may need to replace my existing 2.0 block equipped with 121 head and 9.3 dog bone pistons. I have a spare 1.8 block from an E21 320i. I gather that in theory the 1,8 block will interchange with 2.0 block. Is that true with 121 head setup? I did notice that the 1.8 block does not have the holes for the sort of reinforcing bracket that bolts on below the starter. Is this an important fixture if I use original transmission?? Any difference if I use the matching 5 speed E21 transmission? Any other significant differences?
  14. I trust "were" means past tense. No prize for seeing how long they will last. Problems start on the inside out of sight.
  15. Thanks for the pics of the two starters!

  16. Oh. I see. Very interesting. A picture or four is worth a thousand words. Perhaps the bracket is not as critical with the 440.
  17. A little different, but same idea. Thanks. I see the photos of Bosch SR440 for M3 have the two studs for a bracket. May be safer route. Does Bosch rebuilt for 5 series have the studs?
  18. Clean it up and re-use. What could go wrong?
  19. Thanks for the link. The bracket on my 2000CS attaches the starter to the block. Do 2002s have the same arrangement?
  20. Not having a lift, I would drop diff to lighten load, support car and then drop sub-frame with floor jack.
  21. OK thanks. I think the wide board is the ticket - I was wary of just using a jack.
  22. I gather either the E30 M3 or some M30 six cyl Bosch rebuilt starters will work. Do they use the bracket that attaches the front facing end of the starter to the block? Or do they need it? How fussy are they with cores?
