  • 3 weeks later...

I kind of hijacked another thread with a description that caught my attention because it described the exact problem I have been having with fuel supply..

Well, that thread is interesting to me because since having put my car back together, I have had very similar issues as his original description..

It all started last year (2016) when I moved my side drafts to the beersnob (mechanical fuel pump), and we were driving to vintage... but previously, there were no issues with the side drafts on my red car (electric fuel pump).  So, this is the time line..

-Vintage 2016.. At extended 70-75 mph stretches, it would seem to bog until I let off the throttle a bit, and it would smooth out. Effectively holding me to 70 mph or less. I dealt with it for a year. With no AFM on that car, it was a mystery I didn't bother investigating.

-Fast forward to vintage prep and travel 2017.  Carbs are back on the red car, very similar looking "4 psi" fuel pump to the OP's. from O'reilley, mounted under the car above the differential...  (my Carter 4 PSI pump got cracked in storage) We had no time to shake her down... off to Vintage we go!

-On the trip south, the car would lean out hard during high demand situations, hills, high speed, etc. Talking pegged at 19 on the afm..major loss of power.

-Changed and cleaned jets in Knoxville, worked for a bit, but overall running condition enriched a bit due to jetting changes.

-En-route to Asheville from Knoxville it got progressively worse..

Reset fuel bowl floats at the TN/SC state line and it appeared to be fixed for around 200 miles until the day of the big show when we were climbing the last steep mountain before Hot Springs.. the AFM went to 19 and the car lost all power.   Coasted into the show.

-Stressed all day at the show and spoke to people about the issue every chance I had, even into the night at the hotel. No one could put a finger on the cause, being that it was happening on two cars, with two different fuel pumps, but getting drastically worse.  We were 600 miles from home..

-Sunday, leaving for home, same issue.  Scheduled a Uhaul for noon to drag it back to Cincinnati.

1-1:45 am Sunday, We decided to blow out all the carb passages and while reassembling we found that the inlet screens on the carbs were completely impacted with rust and realized I didn't have a filter after the metal line and before the carbs..(vintage prep) The line had sat for almost two years while the cars was off the road so it must have rusted up inside. (no its not crushed, as I cleaned and installed it myself during the build.

-Cleaned the screens and needle valves out and we made home flawlessly!!

-Back at home, Tuesday after the show I drove the car to work, and boom.  It came back.

-Found more rust, added another fuel filter, before the carbs, checked all connections and blew out all lines, cleaned the existing pre-pump filter and the sending unit. Checked for a clear tank vent..  Problem persists but have to struggle to get home..

-Checked voltage at the pump (from the Tii power tap under the dash.  13-14 volts  (red flag or not?)

-Noticed the rear filter wasn't getting gas. decided to blow through the vent line to push fuel out and prime the pump and it worked.. ?!?!

-Got most of the way home from work and it just kept degrading to the point that even blowing into the tank to push fuel out wasn't working any longer.

-Pulled the pump as it had a life time warranty. I noted that the body was pretty frikkin hot when I pulled it, so I assumed it was just a POS pump failing.

When I got to Oreilley, they looked up the part number and found that it was maybe a 1 psi pump, NOT a 4 psi like I was told it was when I bought it!! ( The product compatibility page shows its good for us) Finding no other in-line pumps that fit the need in the stock I settled for a Mr. Gasket #42S, 2-3.5 PSI micro pump that had a different mounting method, just to get me by. So I just wired it into the trunk and let it lay on the floor until I can get another Carter.. which always worked for me.

-Car ran flawlessly for a week or two.

-This Saturday night after a show, I am climbing a squirmy little two lane hill and pushing the car hard.. as I crest the hill, it happened AGAIN!!!   Once I let off and take it real easy for a minute, it levels out, AFM stabilizes to the mid 13-14s at cruising and it was fine the rest of the trip home.

-The next day, I go to drive across town to the garage where I keep the car, and it barely ran.

-----Put it away in the garage and here I sit,  wondering what to do next.

Could the e30 80 amp alternator regulator be failing and high voltage killing pumps? (Remember the heat issue with the first one?)

Two filters, before the pump and before the carbs.. maybe the first one is plugged (metal, not clear so I can see in)?

All I know is that I am really getting annoyed.. by something so remedial yet unsolvable.

Maybe its time for a big boy fuel system.  But the Carter, with the same alt, was flawless for two years previously.

Guess I need to test the output at the alt..

Otherwise, I'm kinda stumped, and burned out.

You mention the metal filter before the pump, how long has that been installed? I would try and solve the issue of not being able to blow through the lines and that looks like a good place to start.

I have a feeling the issues have been 'death by 1000 papercuts' as opposed to one large smoking gun. With as long as some things sat and other things were used in the 'snob, rust/dirt/debris could have gotten in the system at a few different points and might not necessarily get cleaned out all at once. Not to mention the mysterious 1 psi pump. Now that you've got more pressure pushing the fuel through it can clog up a filter a lot easier.

Have you looked in the tank to see what the inside walls look like?

The little metal filter on the pump inlet  has been in play for maybe 150 miles.  Tank wasn't horrible before it went off to be powder coated..but how can you really tell with out a scope or something I guess.  Carbs and fuel system have been completely cleaned.  I have a new carter 4 psi/30 gph pump in stock now, so that will be a slight improvement in delivery over the 3.5/28 that the currently installed.   I just can't help but wonder if the pumps are getting killed..but I need to clean that filter and see what comes out.

Just a thought, J...maybe the Dellortos are different, but while trying to figure out JB's Webers, I thought I read that the fuel pressure only needs to be 2-2.5 psi, and most people use a regulator to make sure it is right in that range.  Do you have a regulator?  I know we found that JB's regulator was toast, and had to be replaced.  It wasn't working at all, and I think the pump was maybe a little higher pressure than yours - so the carbs were literally getting twice the psi they should have.

Just a thought.

Good thinking Scott.

Jason, do you have a gauge on the supply line right before the carbs. Might be worth getting a small one to verify that the supply psi is good (though it's a bit obvious it's lacking from the lean AFR).

It does seem like something could be stressing the pump extra hard, whether it's a blockage or extra voltage.

I had been wanting one of these for years now. I finally just pulled the trigger on it, since my last post.

And from all I've read in the past, Dellortos like 3.5-4 psi. At least this will tell me where it is exactly and I can experiment with less than the 4 that the pump is advertised to be calibrated for, in the case I am remembering wrong. But it still seems like a pump issue being that it's lean and not dumping fuel out the throats.

We will see.

I hear you.  It's really odd...

It could be something unexpected - it almost seems like it has to be at this point.  The usual suspects have been rounded up and interrogated several times...

Lean...too much air...or not enough fuel...or both...

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation.
