Met David E. Davis at the Greenwich Concours yesterday

Recommended Posts

He was mingling about the 72tii we brought and this absolutely stunningly original 30,XXX mile original never painted never been apart 72tii.

It was pretty cool to meet the man who's words did so much to turn people on to 2002's 40 years ago! Told him that his hymnal had become a bible and he told me that there really was a Bucko Penoyer.

Here are a couple pix.

The show was a little mental overload with all the Ferrari's, a Delahaye, many Rolls Royce's, etc. Its a well run event and really fun, but it was high 90's yesterday and fairly humid too.

I went to the Ault Park Concours D'Elegance in Cincinnati yesterday. I met Jeff Lane of the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville. He brought a number of microcars including the tiniest car of all: the Peel. I had gone to his museum back in '06 on Mike Self's recommendation. He remembered Mike since he had fine-tuned a 4CV for him while visiting the museum years ago. There was a very exquisite burgundy 507 there owned by Rick Grant, a Daytonian w/quite a collection of concours automobiles. Likewise, it was in the 90's here in Ohio and humid. My son and I are not used to the heat yet. Oh, and the Batmobile from the old TV show was there.

GE Matt - I wish I knew you were attending.

I had thought of displaying my '64 R27 with the bike

riff-raff section of the Concours. Instead took my usual morning ride up to Danbury for breakfast and enjoyed the cool sweepers around Pound Ridge

and South West CT before the heat and 4-wheel cages hit the roads.

Hidout indoors for the rest of the day.

was the banquet guest speaker. And I forgot to bring my April 1968 Car & Driver ("...Turn Your Hymnals to...") for him to autograph.

That year we had 104 2002s at Ofest--those that attended each got a really nice enamel grille badge. Ludwig wears his proudly; it was a 2700 mile round trip--on his original engine.

I have my original R&T article mounted in a frame on the wall in my garage...having it autographed would be very cool! :-)

I've never yet had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Davis. However his fabulous prose, most especially in that now-legendary C&D article, had a lasting impression on me, and my lust for and eventual purchase of my beloved 2002.

For any who've yet to read Hymnal Song #2002, or who'd like an inspiring refresher, here's a link to my personal transcription of that article.

I met Denise McCluggage (Autoweek) and Joe Dematio (Automobile) at the airport in Beijing in fall of '06. They were there doing that Mercedes trip through China. I was kind of dumb-founded to see Denise on my plane - I thought it was her, and lo and behold we were next to each other in some line when we landed. I guess that little picture of her in Autoweek I've seen a billion times made me recognize her.

It was so cool. I emailed with her back and forth a few times - really great person.

My next goal is to meet Mike Self in person - he is also a famous magazine writer with his picture in his column, so I'll know him when I see him. ;-)

Ofest that year. Six miles, 1200 foot elevation change, lotsa curves and almost no traffic. Just the place for '02s to play!

For sure there are some awesome drives up here in Summit county, including that one and others over towards Breckenridge, or Fairplay and Leadville. Great way to spend weekend afternoons driving the 02, and little/no traffic off the main arteries.

I didn't move to Denver until just after OFest 02, which I sadly missed (still lived in N'awlins at that time).

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
