Door window handles: what springs & plastic rings?

OK.

What is the PROPER order for all these items on the door panels. I have seen every combination of plastic rings and springs and different orientation of each.

Numbered for the sake of our argument.

This is why I bring this up.

RealOEM agrees with Duke for the order for the parts for the window winder. However, for the vent window knob it shows the knob(6), the cylindrical spring (5), and then the trim ring (4).

No, Armond. Not a new project. Just trying to figure out what is RIGHT for these cars after 20 plus years of ownership.

Duke is correct. OEM picture is wrong.

There is a black plastic, cone shaped part that goes betwwen the vent window knob handle and the vinyl outside of the door panel. The spring goes between the panel and the inside of the door.

The window winder spring is fitted between the door panel and the inside of the door with the large end pressing against the inside of the door panel.

I think there is a picture of the correct installation procedure in your Haynes manual.

I just fumbled around with this yesterday on the driver's side of my "Orange Julius." The book is in storage somewhere along with the rest of my worldly goods.

RealOEM diag for the roll up window crank bits...

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=ST12&mospid=47140&btnr=51_3354&hg=51&fg=05

And for the wing window knob bits...

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=ST12&mospid=47140&btnr=51_3353&hg=51&fg=05

The install pattern is:

Roll up window:

-door

-plastic vapor barrier

-small end of the spring (large end against door panel)

-door panel

-"stop disk" or ring/washer (early crank handles used a metal ring with teeth, later "normal" handles use plastic dished washers)

-window crank handle

-retaining screw

-plastic cover

Wing window parts lineup: The parts diagram of parts order is wrong

-door

-plastic vapor barrier

-spring

-door panel

-dished plastic spacer/washer

-crank knob

-5mm split lock washer

-retaining screw

-outer snap cover

So if I follow this right on the vent knob installation
start with the spring against the door & vapor barrier to the door card (no ring there against cardboard?).
Then protector ring on the vinyl side of door card to the knob and handle?

Mine is a 76 and has an additional rubber like ring that goes somewhere - I'm guessing just behind the knob between that and the protector ring?

I don't recognize that part from my 15 years with a '76.
