Drive Shaft Bolt Size

I can't believe I'm needing to ask this but I can't find anything via search either here or Google.

What size is the bolt to split the driveshaft in the center?  Looks like a 21mm or 22mm and you need to likely modify the wrench to get it to fit?  While I have the driveshaft out, I'm finally getting around to replacing the CSB that has been sitting in the garage for years...

...then why do I have a modified 24mm wrench for taking them apart?

Hmmm.

Later versions (E21?) were held together with a bolt, but I remember that

having an even smaller head, like 17 or 19.

I'd suggest measuring it, before you grind!

it's been too long...

Yes you need to modify the wrench.

I never needed anything other than a std Craftsman box end wrench.   Set the driveshaft section at an angle and slip the wrench on the nut.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Yup - it’s a 27mm on my car. My 1in ring wrench ground down worked just fine despite being a tad big.

Fortunately Ireland marked it when they shortened it, so all good there.

Every 2002 driveline I have ever taken apart that nut was 24mm.  Use a 12 point end wrench and you need to grind the thickness down to about 60-75% of the original thickness (Craftsman combination wrench, still have it in my tool box after 45+ years)

Possibly an after market replacement, quite a bit cheaper and a lock nut to boot.

Your inches must be bigger than mine.

27mm is much bigger than 1 inch.
