My engine rebuild and bay restoration

Figured I’d share the progress on my ‘74 2002
started in July after a compression test showed cylinders 2 and 4 were toast. 1 and 3 were hanging in there but if i remember right the readings weren’t great either. I decided to pull the motor and at the same time restore the bay. A lot of hours went into prep work and paint and I’m proud to share the results.

as for the engine, rebuilt the head entirely and put a new cam in, and basically replaced everything other than a couple valves that were in good shape.
The block was in surprisingly great shape and didn’t need much.
i have only had this car for about a year now and i don’t know much of its history other than it was fairly well maintained.

As you can see i still have some work to do but I’m hoping to have her back in the road in the next few weeks. CD72E2A7-0AB2-417F-B33F-DB073CE40F0D.thumb.png.b62f4e5b4c365e237136a8ba70561710.png03DA3798-8EF2-4E94-9C43-7B20302E0331.thumb.png.3da03a4e5f8299c70e1cab1d4c325ffb.png503CE17A-418C-445D-BAC5-FC5149D0C0DD.thumb.jpeg.859ca6af95005160cc51d58e8fbeec9e.jpeg56D2FAE9-8CD8-45D7-8146-55C25A505188.thumb.jpeg.5dd719bc28b3f02a2e4d454b537bb96f.jpeg8EDF92B1-2C9D-4A29-A032-6730DCE7A384.thumb.jpeg.6efef96c7a0fb6f0cca89c42c0b7e1ef.jpeg

Wow!  What a difference.

A trick I learned for masking off wiring when you're doing an engine compartment (or elsewhere where there are wires and repainting):  wrap the wiring bundles with aluminum foil.  Foil is great for odd-shaped things that you don't want to get paint on.  Squeeze it on tightly and you don't need masking tape.   What did you re-wrap your wiring harnesses with?  Hard to tell in the pictures.

Great trick! I’ll be sure to remember that.. for the wiring i first replaced any brittle wires. Next wrapped them in groups as they previously were with Tessa tape. After that i wrapped them with wire loom. The loom is sort of plastic mesh that holds to itself, very nice.
