I just had a similar experience with a shop in San Diego.  I've got either bad valve guides/seals or bad rings.

 

"$15,000 for a full rebuild, we won't do valve guides/seals only" - Pass.

Oooh, documentation! thats what I'm talking about. Looks like a good comprehensive overhaul. No new pistons but Meh, might still be ok. No main bearings on the parts list... odd.

 Given the fact it was removed for an engine upgrade, it probably has relatively low miles on the overhaul.

I would have happily paid $750.

if it was me I would be sorely tempted to just drop it in and see what happens?

The seller sure thought so, thought I would be all like.. wow!

Took some effort to get price down from $450

Had to get all "oh man, I dont know..going to have to swap oil pans, pick ups and fit an electric fuel pump"

That was after an under the valve cover inspection and "thumb over the hole" compression test. Think he agreed to drop the price just to get rid of me?

I might take the clutch off and check it out for condition, also...

nows the time to refresh your shifter linkage and driveshaft if needed.

I think this is the Basis of why 2002’s are one of the most emotional cars to own, I’m on my Fourth 02 over many years and this one alone is on its third and final version, the Hold My Beer can do attitude is what makes the 02 so enjoyable for me ??

What do you think a Tii engine is worth?  I'm thinking about selling the one I just took out of my car after rebuilding the original one.  I'm using the Kfish and some other Tii parts on the new engine.  It only has 18,000 miles on it and was built by BMW as a replacement engine in '87.

$2500? most the value of a tii engine is the tii parts, otherwise it’s just another M10 with an extra hole.

Car goes into the shop because it "stalls sometimes" and problems with LED tail lights and comes out with a fresh engine....and  a $3750.00 bill.

I hate when that happens?

Noy to mention a funky lower timing cover, I saw a Carbed one at a shop, looked really weird
