FS: Set of 5 Campagnolo (?) or Borrani (?) alloys, 6x13

Recommended Posts

Matched set of 5 alloy wheels for sale.  These were mounted on a '72 2002 that I imported from Milan, Italy a few years ago.  I mounted factory wheels and these have been gathering dust in my garage.  Time to move them along.

Interestingly, they have almost NO markings on them -- no manufacturer, no size, no date, no model number.  The cast center caps are embossed "R.B." and "Milano."  I suspect that R.B. may indicate Ruote Borrani (Borrani Wheels), which was based in Milan.  A second idea is that these may be Campagnolo, based on the photo on page 2 of the Campagnolo period article attached here.  I don't see these wheels in the Wheel Database here.   If any of you have more definitive information, please chime in.

The wheels are 13x6, 4x100 lugs, 55mm center bore, and ET 25mm (by my measurement).  Each weighs 12.3 lbs.  The set includes 5 wheels, 4 center caps and 16 correct chrome lug nuts.  The center caps appear original and are held on with a spring in a groove.  The caps have embossed roundels on the exterior and have been hand-painted (a passable 10-foot paint job).  The wheel faces are very good driver condition with no bends or rash.  The insides of the barrels have some brake dust staining.  All descriptions here are to the best of my knowledge and ability.  Happy to answer any questions.

Price is $1,500, plus actual shipping.  Wheels are in northeast Georgia (30677).  I'll be attending events in the next few months in Charleston, SC, Asheville, NC, Greenville, SC, Chattanooga and Atlanta and would be happy to deliver them.

Those wheels are super pretty! I'm guessing this post will be moved to the FS section soon.

Kind of off topic - I was reading a Roundel from 1973 last night and the name "Don Bower" was printed in an article about a CCA economy test. Was that you!?

Yep, there was a regional get-together that included a fuel economy contest on the way there.  Our '72 tii would have won if I had remembered to turn in my results!

Feel free to move my FS post to the best area, or tell me how to do it.  Thanks.

They’re beautiful rims: very... late 1960’s in their style. Also reminiscent of Sterling Metal‘s GT model:

And whatever the rims below are...

The wheels very similar to “Delta” from a foundry in Milano.

And there appear to be some variations among the Delta rims.

The set of Delta rims shown in the first three photos below are ever-so-slightly different from Don’s rims, but have a 4 x 108mm PCD, which may account for the difference, a difference which lies at the stud holes. These rims are marked “Delta” and “Milano - Italy”.

The Delta Milano shown in the fourth through sixth photos below — similar to that shown by Schon ‘02 and reminiscent of, but clearly different from, Don’s rims — have “RB Milano” center caps, emphasizing that “RB Milano” center caps do not necessarily signify rims by Ruote Borrani.

Throughout this era, Ruote Borrani used the logo shown in the seventh photo, with “Ruote Borrani“ spelled out around their ancient and famous “Red Hand of Ulster” logo. Further, Ruote Borrani, which has been a division of CMR since the 1950’s, clearly manufactured wire rims, bimetal rims (riveted together), and steel rims (with the CMR mark, but sometimes marketed under the Borrani brand name), but does not appear to have made one-piece cast alloy rims — as these are — at least during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

The similar Campagnolo rim shown in the ca. 1969 article is a rim designed for the Alfa Romeo Montreal, as shown in the eighth (last) photo below. I’m not aware of other similar Campagnolo rims.

I’d attribute these rims to Delta, which I assume is a brand name used by one of the Milan foundries. They’re beautiful and rare rims.

Best regards,

Steve

Folks:  Thanks for all your feedback.  Based on this new info, I think we can conclude that these are NOT Borrani wheels (though I still wonder what that "R.B." connotes).

They are not the exact wheels on the Alfa Monteal, which have a different PCD and bore, but they are a very similar design.  As one commenter noted, apparently this general design is/was not uncommon in Europe -- though I don't ever recall seeing them on a 2002 in the US.

I doubt they are Campys, even though those in the old photo look very similar.  Every Campy I have seen had identifying info somewhere on the wheel.  Maybe they are Deltas, but the Deltas pictured in this thread also have identifying logos on them.

I'm convinced that these wheels were made specifically for 2002's since the specs are perfect and the center caps have roundels cast into them.

So the manufacturer part of the mystery continues, but the good news is that I've reduced the asking price to $1,250.

The model of Delta Milano shown in the first two photos below, which is not the model most similar to your set, came both with and without the manufacturer’s name, location, rim size, etc., cast into the rim. I’m simply noting the range of their output. The presence or absence of cast-in factory markings does not alter the model attribution in the instance of Delta Milano rims.

I’ve got no brochures, no pamphlets, no nuthin’ — other than a few photos (third through fifth photos) — to back up my Delta Milano attribution, but that’s where I’m at, at least today.

GLWS,

Steve

OK, folks.  Here's my update.  I'm reducing the price to $1,000.  Remember, this is for 5 wheels and all the doodads.  I feel like this is a deal for anyone looking for a genuine period set of 6-inch alloys.  If nobody bites at this price, I'll just hang on to them.  Thanks for looking.

Is a square tail too young for these wheels? Any opinions? I have 14” BBS on the Fjord ‘76. Thinking going 13l”. Like these just not not sure they look the era. I know, just a few years, but a different vibe than the ‘72 Inkarado. Keeping original steels on that.

The Fjord does have Italian front signals, so that’s a tie-in. Pics of current look.
