As no end of the isolation is in sight and the weather is sunny, it’s time to rebuild the last thing that has not been out of the car. After 49 years I am surprised how clean it is.

Forgive my ignorance, but given what I believe are the axle spacers adjacent to the diff, can I assume this is a 320i diff, perhaps a 3.91? I'm looking to do the same swap if so. Any tips?

To be brutally honest,  I was fortunate to purchase  a car that had the exact set up  I was looking for. (5 spd/3.91 LSD). It's  origin was from an e21then  transplanted into a 1970 02, and subsequently to mine. I merely dismantled it and powder coated the bits and bolted everything back up. That said It is a 3.91LSD and as far as spacers are concerned I do not recall this set up being any different from the ones you see here. I did polish the flange on the diff, so maybe that is what you are seeing.

 

I see in @PaulTWinterton setup it appears to be different but I believe he changed his ratio recently. I am sure he will be happy to weigh in ....hth

My more recent diff is a 3.45 LSD from a 320, w/ spacers.  AFAIK, early tiis came with a 3.45 option. Maybe standard in Europe.

Performance-wise. I love the traction.  But I REALLY like that my speedo and odometer are spot on!  First time in 30 years.

We are trying to match the early subframe grey used up to 1974.  Black was used from 74 onward.

According to my factory parts book (pg 33-2) 3.45 diffs were not fitted to US-bound tii's, only "rest of the world" cars.  I've heard persistent rumors that the earliest US tii's were fitted with 3.45 diffs, but have yet to encounter one that was definitely factory. 

 

Of course there are always the "special friends of Max Hoffman" cars that definitely didn't follow the rules (close ratio 5 speeds, LSDs from the factory etc etc).  And cars ordered directly from the factory by overseas stationed military and diplomatic personnel (like Carl Nelson's US spec cabriolet) that bypassed Hoffman and somehow evaded Federal requirements.
