Front hub options

Recommended Posts

I'm pulling all the parts together (and apart) to rebuild the polaris 2002 subframes and have been unable to break the front hubs loose from the rotors.  The allen bolts are rusted solid.  I already have new rotors and will be replacing almost everything anyway, so I thought I would look for new front hubs.   Well..I see a couple of places that sell them for over $300. ECS Tuning has a pair for $100.  They say they come from Ireland Engineering.  But when I look on the IE site, all I see are E21 hubs that fit the 2002 spindle as part of a big brake kit.  I plan on using stock brakes on this car.   I dropped a note to Jorge at IE but since it Sunday, I'm thinking one of you might be able to provide some answers to the following questions:

Is there a good relatively inexpensive source for 2002 front hubs?

Has anyine used the 2002 set from ECS?

Are the E21 "small bearing" and 2002 front hubs interchangeable?

What else do I need to know here?

Thanks,

Scott

Heat is your friend-

heat the rotor, not the hub, and do it several times.

Dull red is just a bit too hot, but not much.

An impact driver with a GOOD inhex bit then usually works.

Or a rattlegun.  Or both.

I would put E21 hubs, rotors and Volvo calipers on simply for the

ease of service, and lack of warping.  Plus, rotor availability.

There are some parts of vintage cars that should be less vintage than others,

if they're going to be driven.

Or start slicing the rotors until you'll be able to weld some bolts good to rusted allens...

The heat is your friend ( and damn good movie too).

Unfortunately, I already bought all the stock replacement parts.....   So I guess I'm stuck with the 2002 hubs, or are the E21 hubs interchangeable?

My impression is that used examples of the non-tii hubs are relatively plentiful and relatively cheap. How about a WTB ad in this forum’s classifieds section?

When I needed a set of tii front hubs, it might have taken a day or two to locate a set. And I believe those are far rarer.

Steve

I screwed around with an impact for a while but it didn't help.

Plan B worked;

Spin the lug nuts onto the studs to protect them from the jaws of the vise.

Place rotor, lugs down, in jaws of vise.

Adjust lug nuts so flats of lugs rest flat against vise jaws. You don't even need to clamp it.

Attach 1/2" drive impact allen bit to 1/2" drive breaker bar.

Easily remove allen screws/bolts by hand.

Like butter.

The hubs and rotors are not interchangeable, the 02 rotor mounts to the back of the hub and the e21  goes over the top or the rotor.
