Refresh vs Restore? Subframe Re&Re and Undercoating. (Long)

What are the opinions about this ?

That was my dilemma.  In the northern climates we are faced with temperature and humidity fluctuations WAY more so than in SoCal.  I had to do something.  At minimum surface rust can run all along the edges (below the rockers) and in the recesses anywhere from the C pillar back.  Rust Bullet and Por-15 are great products but where do you stop?  The minute you apply a treatment and a coating  you are saying "maybe there is something hiding under there".

I decided I don't care.  The car is not for sale and if I did sell it, I have tons of pictures showing before and after.  At least now I have the peace of mind knowing that I have kicked some rust butt and addressed the hidden and boxed areas never touched by protective coatings before.

By the way...Eastwood Internal Frame Coating is a really cool product.

If I was so lucky to have a SoCal 02 and lived in San Diego I'd probably do nothing except inspect the rockers, shock tower boxes and the subframe carrier boxes to make sure there is no dirt and moisture trapped inside.

Fish oil?  That's a first for me.  Sounds smelly.

Side note: The bottom of my car is in better than average shape for a nothern car likely due to an oil leak for most of it's early life.  I had to scrape 1/4" of oily dirt off to find factory undercoat, overspray, and primer in good condition on the majority of the bottom.

ah, but they have deodorized oil as well.

I am not suggesting you put this on your car, Paul.

Just commenting on the post that said we have two choices... nope, at least three!

Torqued Hub nuts.  Did I reach 300 ft lbs?  I don't know, but I did my best.

I believe your 150 pound body (guessing) standing on a two foot long breaker bar should put you right at 300 foot pounds.

I need to stop reading your posts and looking at your photos.  My car seems filthy and neglected now.

Actually more like 40 inches of steel pipe.  But I only put my shoulder into it.

I'm hoping to make the Burgers&BMWs event coming up.  ROADTRIP!  Look forward to seeing you then.

Geez that's gorgeous. What kind of paint did you use for your exhaust? I just purchased a brand new OEM Ebersbacher exhaust and it wasn't perfect cosmetically speaking from the get-go so I'd like to paint it soon.

VHT matte grey.  Very similar to the stock OEM finish.  You can see the stock finish in my opening post...not so pretty.  Leaking rusty moisture at the edges, but still working well, at about 8 years old (guessing).

Did a search for VHT  "Matt Grey"  and only found it available in UK  maybe Canada too ?

Is this available in the US ?   Other VHT paint like  Cast Iron or Silver just don't look right  The "Matt Grey" looks great but at about $35 a can with shipping from the UK,  there but be an alternative.

This past Winter I lifted the car again and removed the exhaust system, driveshaft and transmission in preparation to complete the refinishing of the bottom of the car from the B pillar to the engine bay bulkhead.  I could not leave the job half done, as I reminded myself that the rear subframe, trunk and under the rear seats were all shiny and fresh, while forward of that was grimy with patches of surface rust.

Scraping, degreasing, grinding, sanding, rust treatment, masking, priming and painting. Done!

Next is the engine bay and front subframe.  Not sure yet when that will happen. Probably do that while the engine is being rebuilt.  Someday.

2020 driving season starts tomorrow!  Yay!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
